Oslo – The announcement of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s lung condition arrived on a day already marked by significant developments in the Jeffrey Epstein case, prompting speculation about the timing of the disclosure. Was the timing coincidental, or a calculated move to divert attention? Now, her physician is responding to questions surrounding the announcement.
The revelation of Mette-Marit’s health challenges coincided with the scheduled release of documents related to the Epstein affair, raising eyebrows among communication experts. Some have suggested the timing was strategic, intended to overshadow the impending scrutiny surrounding the Crown Princess’s past connections to the convicted sex offender.
Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet inquired with the palace regarding any connection between the press release concerning Mette-Marit and the Epstein document release date. Guri Varpe, the palace’s head of communications, responded to the inquiry through the industry publication Journalisten, stating, “There was no connection.” Varpe explained that the timing of the announcement was determined by coordinating the release with an upcoming interview with the Crown Prince and Princess for the program “Året med kongefamilie” [The Year with the Royal Family], the availability of the physician for interviews and press conferences, and the official schedule of the Royal Family.

Physician Addresses Timing of Announcement
Lung specialist Are Martin Holm, who was present at the press conference, explained on March 6, 2026, to the industry portal Journalisten that the timing of the announcement was likewise dependent on his own schedule. “The appointment was set after when I was available,” Holm stated.
In a separate conversation with Se og Hør, the physician emphasized that organizational reasons were primarily responsible for the timing. He explained that he had no available appointments the previous week due to other commitments, and the following week fell during the Christmas holiday period. “In that week, I only had two possible appointments,” Holm clarified.
Communication Control Remained with the Crown Prince Couple
The interview with the Crown Prince and Princess was recorded on December 12th, during which Mette-Marit indicated that a lung transplant might be necessary. According to NRK, the Norwegian broadcaster, the information was held back for approximately one week to allow the Crown Prince couple to determine the appropriate time for its release.
Sofie Gran Aspunvik of NRK explained that December interviews are routinely recorded shortly before Christmas to facilitate program planning and scheduling coordination. She added that no further considerations were involved, and it was deemed appropriate for the Crown Princess to decide when to make the announcement public.

Concurrently, the Crown Princess’s previous connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein continues to generate headlines and criticism worldwide. Public trust in Mette-Marit appears to be waning in Norway, and her public image has suffered significantly. The Epstein documents reveal that Mette-Marit’s name appears over 1,000 times, detailing an intensive exchange between her and Epstein between 2011 and 2014, including arrangements for dental appointments and shopping trips, as reported by BUNTE.de.
What’s Next?
As the fallout from the Epstein revelations continues, the Norwegian Royal House faces ongoing scrutiny. The coming months will likely see continued public debate regarding Mette-Marit’s past associations and the impact on the monarchy’s reputation. The focus will remain on the Crown Princess’s health journey and how the Royal Family navigates this challenging period.
