The Dutch government has authorized the deployment of the air defense and command frigate HNLMS Evertsen to the eastern Mediterranean Sea, a move prompted by requests from France to bolster regional security amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The decision, confirmed Tuesday, will see the vessel remain in the area until at least early April.
France initially requested assistance as it deployed a significant naval fleet to the region, including the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, in response to the ongoing conflict. The Evertsen had already been conducting training exercises with the Charles de Gaulle in the Baltic Sea prior to being redirected towards the Mediterranean, allowing for a coordinated transit and rapid positioning, according to Defense Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz.
The primary mission of the Evertsen is to protect allied nations, specifically identifying Cyprus and Turkey as key areas of focus. Both countries are within range of potential attacks originating from Iran or affiliated groups, Yeşilgöz stated. This follows an incident last week where a British army base in Cyprus was struck by a drone, believed to have been launched from Lebanon.
“This is really aimed at defending our allies,” Yeşilgöz told reporters. “There is no question of an offensive mission.” She emphasized the deployment is intended as a deterrent, demonstrating a commitment to safeguarding allied territory and providing support. The frigate is equipped to detect aerial threats from a distance, providing early warning capabilities to partner forces.
The deployment is described as “defensive in nature” and intended to act as a deterrent, according to a joint statement from Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Slot and Defense Minister Yeşilgöz. Although acknowledging the inherent risks involved, Yeşilgöz affirmed that the crew of approximately 170 personnel are well-trained for the operation.
In addition to protecting allied territory, the Evertsen will also contribute to the security of other naval vessels operating in the area, particularly the Charles de Gaulle and its accompanying ships. The Dutch government communicated its decision to Parliament in a formal letter outlining the mission parameters.
The deployment comes as concerns grow over potential escalation in the Middle East. While the Dutch government has not specified a direct threat to its own interests, the decision underscores a commitment to regional stability and the defense of its NATO and EU partners. The Evertsen is currently near Malta and its precise arrival time at its designated patrol area remains undisclosed.
