U.S. Marines are utilizing German-made Vector drones for reconnaissance and surveillance missions in Puerto Rico, supporting U.S. Southern Command efforts to counter illicit trafficking. The deployment, involving units from Battalion Landing Team 3/6, 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), centers on operations at Camp Santiago, according to a statement released on March 11, 2026.

The Vector, manufactured by Quantum Systems, is an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) designed for mid-range intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). Its key advantage lies in its ability to operate in confined spaces without requiring runways or specialized launch equipment, a feature particularly valuable for expeditionary forces. The system provides real-time, high-resolution imagery to operators, enabling them to monitor activities and respond to potential threats.

According to Quantum Systems, the Vector’s capabilities have been refined through operational experience, including deployments in Ukraine. The latest iteration of the drone incorporates artificial intelligence to assist with data processing, reducing the workload on operators. The system’s modular architecture allows for rapid reconfiguration as a multicopter without requiring changes to hardware or training, enhancing its versatility in dynamic operational environments.

The U.S. Marine Corps’ use of the Vector is focused on disrupting human trafficking and protecting the homeland, as stated by U.S. Southern Command. The drone’s silent operation and fixed-wing endurance contribute to its effectiveness in detecting and tracking illicit activities. The Vector was added to the U.S. Department of Defense’s Blue UAS List in August 2025, signifying its approval for use by the U.S. Military.

Quantum Systems highlighted the increasing reliance on small unmanned aerial systems across U.S. Military operations. The Vector’s open systems architecture allows for future expansion of capabilities and mission roles. The company noted that the system transmits high-resolution imagery via a real-time data link, enabling operators to monitor activity and respond to emerging threats.
