Cupra has unveiled a comprehensive facelift for its Born electric hatchback, featuring a redesigned exterior, a significantly updated interior centered around Android-based infotainment, and revised powertrain options. The changes, previewed earlier this month, mark a substantial refresh for the model, which is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform.
The exterior updates include a new front fascia, described as a “shark nose” design, incorporating triangular air intakes and revised headlights. Matrix LED headlights are available as an option. At the rear, the Born receives a redesigned bumper with an illuminated Cupra logo integrated into a light bar connecting the taillights, and a more prominent diffuser. New color options, including Timanfaya Grey, and redesigned 19 and 20-inch alloy wheels complete the exterior changes.
Inside, the most significant change is the adoption of an Android-based infotainment system. Here’s paired with a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, replacing the previous setup and creating a more balanced visual experience alongside the existing 12.9-inch touchscreen. Cupra has also increased its use of recycled materials in the cabin, including SEAQUAL Yarn derived from ocean plastics.
The powertrain lineup has been adjusted. The base model now features a 58 kWh battery (net capacity) paired with a 140 kW electric motor. Above this, the Endurance version offers a 79 kWh battery and a 170 kW motor. The performance-oriented VZ model, available with all-wheel drive, retains the 79 kWh battery and boasts a power output of 240 kW. Cupra states that the 79 kWh battery versions will offer a range of approximately 600 km (373 miles) based on the WLTP cycle.
The facelift also addresses previous criticisms of the Born’s interior controls. The updated model replaces the controversial haptic controls on the steering wheel with physical buttons, improving usability and safety. The Born now features four window switches, a change made in response to feedback regarding the previous two-switch configuration found in other Volkswagen Group vehicles.
The Cupra Born facelift is being positioned as a key model within the Volkswagen Group’s electric vehicle strategy, arriving alongside revisions to the VW ID.3. Production of the updated Born continues at the Zwickau plant in Germany.
