Hong Kong Film Festival: ‘We Are All Strangers’ Opens 50th Edition | Variety

Hong Kong’s vibrant cinematic landscape is set to celebrate a milestone with the 50th edition of the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF). This year’s festival, running from April 1-12, will spotlight both established and emerging talent, opening with Anthony Chen’s critically acclaimed “We Are All Strangers” and closing with Philip Yung’s “Cyclone.” Both films will receive their Asian premieres at the event, marking a significant moment for regional cinema.

The festival’s Golden Jubilee edition will showcase a diverse program of 215 films from 71 countries and regions, including 11 world premieres, four international premieres and 49 Asian premieres. Under the theme “50 and Beyond: Framing the Future,” HKIFF50 aims to reflect on the past although looking ahead to the evolving world of film. The selection underscores Hong Kong’s continued role as a crucial hub for international film exchange.

“We Are All Strangers,” directed by Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen, will kick off the festival on April 1 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The film, the concluding installment of Chen’s “Growing Up” trilogy, explores complex themes of family, identity, and belonging, moving beyond traditional definitions of kinship. The film notably became the first Singaporean film to compete at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival, garnering significant attention and praise. Starring Yeo Yann Yann and Koh Jia Ler, the film delves into the emotional lives of its characters with a nuanced and sensitive approach.

A Focus on Identity and Social Issues

Closing the festival on April 12 will be Philip Yung’s “Cyclone,” a film that tackles the challenging subject of transgender identity and the societal marginalization faced by transgender individuals. Having premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam earlier this year, “Cyclone” stars Liu Yuqiao, Edwynn Li, and Jenny Suen. The film’s inclusion in HKIFF50 highlights the festival’s commitment to showcasing films that address important social issues and promote dialogue.

The festival will also be a gathering place for prominent filmmakers from around the globe. Jia Zhangke has been named Filmmaker-in-Focus, and attendees will include Juliette Binoche, Chen Kaige, Tian Zhuangzhuang, Huang Jianxin, Ann Hui, Tsai Ming-Liang, Ildikó Enyedi, Pen-ek Ratanaruang, Edwin, and Ben Rivers. Their presence underscores the festival’s international stature and its ability to attract leading figures in the film industry.

Ambassadors and Special Events

Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, HKIFF50 has appointed Taiwanese actress Gingle Wang – recognized for her Best Lead Actress prize at the 22nd Taipei Film Festival – and Thai actor Metawin Opasiamkajorn, recipient of the Asian Film Awards Academy’s Asian Rising Star Award in 2024, as Asian visionary ambassadors. They will join festival ambassadors Angela Yuen and Tony Wu in representing the event.

Beyond the film screenings, HKIFF50 will host three sold-out performances of the Asian premiere of “In the Mood for Love – In Concert.” This unique event, a collaboration with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, will offer a fresh interpretation of the iconic score from Wong Kar Wai’s beloved classic. A free exhibition, “50 and Beyond: The Hong Kong International Film Festival Golden Jubilee Exhibition,” will also be on display at Hong Kong City Hall, offering a retrospective glance at the festival’s history.

As the Hong Kong International Film Festival prepares to mark its 50th anniversary, it reaffirms its position as a vital platform for cinematic artistry and cultural exchange. The selection of “We Are All Strangers” and “Cyclone” as the opening and closing films signals a commitment to showcasing films that are both artistically compelling and socially relevant. The festival’s continued success promises to shape the future of Asian cinema for years to come.
