Abyssus: Brinepunk Co-Op FPS Coming to PS5 & Xbox This Summer + Crossplay

by Sophie Lin - Technology Editor

The depths await. Abyssus, a cooperative first-person shooter with roguelike elements, is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S this summer, bringing its unique “brinepunk” setting and challenging gameplay to console players. Developed by DoubleMoose and published by The Arcade Crew, the game will arrive alongside a substantial version 1.3 update, expanding the undersea adventure for all players.

Originally released for PC via Steam on August 12, 2025, Abyssus quickly gained traction for its prompt-paced action and emphasis on team synergy. The console release marks a significant expansion for the title, and crucially, will feature full cross-play functionality, allowing players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam to team up and explore the corrupted underwater civilization together. This seamless integration is a key feature for the game’s cooperative focus.

The core gameplay of Abyssus revolves around a team of “brinepunk” explorers venturing into the ruins of an ancient civilization powered by “brine,” a rare and potent substance found in the ocean’s depths. Players must battle corrupted inhabitants and utilize powerful weapons and abilities to survive. The game’s roguelike structure ensures that each run is a unique experience, with procedurally sequenced levels and a variety of customizable options.

What’s New in Version 1.3?

The version 1.3 update, launching concurrently with the console versions, introduces a wealth of new content at no additional cost. Players can expect a new God to the lineup, bringing with it a host of new blessings for abilities and weapons. Existing Gods will also receive additional blessings, further expanding character customization options. A new playable area will be added, complete with new enemies and bosses, and new room objectives will ensure that no two runs experience the same. The update also includes a revamped and expanded skill tree, alongside streamlined matchmaking and quickplay options, improving the overall player experience. And for those seeking a bit of camaraderie, new sea shanties have been added to build team spirit.

The Arcade Crew also announced a physical “Brine Edition” of Abyssus for PlayStation 5, distributed by Silver Lining Interactive. This edition will include the base game and all currently available cosmetic downloadable content, offering a complete package for dedicated fans.

Alongside the free update, players can purchase the “Brinerot Pack” for $3.99, which includes a new suit, helmet, emote, and portrait frame to customize their Brinehunter.

Brinepunk Gameplay and Cooperative Focus

Abyssus distinguishes itself with its unique brinepunk aesthetic and emphasis on cooperative play. The game is designed for one to four players, encouraging team synergy and strategic build experimentation. Players must coordinate their abilities and weapon upgrades to overcome the high-risk, high-reward combat encounters that lie beneath the ocean’s surface. The game features 64 hand-crafted levels, 8 different weapons customizable with 45 weapon mods, and 36 different enemies and four bosses, according to The Arcade Crew’s official website.

The developers highlight the importance of teamwork, stating that players must “muster your fireteam, blast through the corrupted denizens of an ancient, sunken civilization, and wield godly powers” to survive. The cross-play functionality further enhances this cooperative experience, allowing friends on different platforms to join forces.

With the console launch and version 1.3 update on the horizon, Abyssus is poised to reach a wider audience. The addition of cross-play and the wealth of new content are expected to revitalize the game and attract both new and returning players. The success of the console release will likely dictate the future development roadmap, with potential for further content updates and expansions. Fans of cooperative shooters and roguelike games should keep a close eye on Abyssus as it dives into the console space this summer.
