Arkansas Democrats Criticize Sanders & Turning Point USA School Plan

by

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Young Democrats of Arkansas (YDA) sharply criticized Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Turning Point USA (TPUSA) CEO Erika Kirk Wednesday, accusing them of leveraging state power to promote a politically biased initiative in Arkansas schools.

The criticism came during a press conference held by the YDA ahead of a scheduled announcement by Sanders and Kirk regarding the expansion of TPUSA’s “Club America” chapters into high schools and universities across the state. YDA President Billy Cook characterized the planned announcement as “an abuse of her state power,” asserting that the governor was improperly using state resources to influence students.

“Let’s be clear, what she’s doing is wrong,” Cook stated. “We respect the rights of students to organize regardless of what political party they’re organizing for. When someone uses their state power and resources to attempt and unfairly influence our students, we will stand up and speak out about that overreach.”

YDA Vice President Aliah Rowe echoed Cook’s concerns, questioning the substantive benefits of the initiative. “We don’t realize exactly what Governor Sanders and Erika Kirk will say at their press event, but I’d be willing to bet that nothing they say will make Arkansans lives more affordable, healthier, safer, or better in any way,” she said.

Governor Sanders signed a proclamation on Wednesday backing TPUSA’s “Club America” effort, formally endorsing the organization’s chapters in Arkansas schools and pledging administrative support for students’ rights to engage in civic and political discussion, according to KATV. The announcement was made alongside Erika Kirk at the Governor’s Mansion.

Kirk, speaking at the event, encouraged students to remain involved in the organization even in the face of opposition, framing the effort as extending beyond electoral politics. According to a Facebook post by THV11, Sanders announced plans to promote the creation of Club America chapters on campuses statewide.

Protests occurred outside the Governor’s Mansion during the announcement, with demonstrators expressing concerns about the potential for political indoctrination in schools. Carrigan Moore, a protester, stated, “We’re really hurt to see how education has become exploited and dismantled because they want to push this Christian Nationalism. You shouldn’t be told what to believe.”

Megan Major, a high school student who attended the event, expressed support for political discussion in schools, but emphasized the importance of balanced representation. “I’m against it being one or the other, like we’re seeing a lot of polarization in the political climate,” Major said, likewise voicing concerns that the initiative could lead to teacher resignations.

The governor’s proclamation follows a similar effort by TPUSA to establish a presence in schools across the country. The organization aims to foster civic engagement among young people, but critics allege that its efforts are geared toward promoting a conservative political agenda.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Governor Sanders and Erika Kirk had not responded to specific criticisms leveled by the Young Democrats of Arkansas.
