Middle East Crisis: Civilians Face Devastation & Urgent Aid Needed

by

The Secours Populaire Français has launched an urgent appeal for donations as conflict intensifies across the Middle East and Near East, exacerbating a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation. The organization reported on March 3, 2026, that war is “ravaging entire regions” with a growing risk of further escalation.

As in previous conflicts, civilian populations are bearing the brunt of the violence. Women, children, the elderly, and already vulnerable families are facing bombardment, forced displacement, and shortages of water, food, healthcare, and protection, according to the Secours Populaire.

The organization highlighted the long-term consequences of the conflict, noting that a new generation is growing up amidst constant war. “Growing up in fear, instability and loss profoundly shapes life trajectories and jeopardizes the future of an entire region,” the Secours Populaire stated.

On the ground, partner organizations of Secours Populaire are working to provide assistance in extremely challenging conditions, often risking their own safety. Many aid workers are personally affected by the conflict, with their homes, families, and villages impacted by the fighting.

In Lebanon, DPNA, a partner organization of Secours Populaire, has responded to the sudden evacuation of approximately 80 villages. Thousands of families have been displaced, seeking refuge in makeshift shelters, including schools repurposed as emergency housing. DPNA volunteers are providing essential supplies like blankets, hot meals, and emotional support to those affected. “Families have travelled more than 10 hours to arrive: when we welcome them, they are exhausted,” said Manar, a DPNA communications officer.

In the Palestinian territories, partner organizations including BASR, PMRS and HDIP are facing increased violence. Conditions in Gaza are described as extremely precarious, while communities in the West Bank are experiencing daily violence and land seizures. The Secours Populaire noted that this crisis is unfolding during Ramadan, a time traditionally dedicated to spirituality, sharing, and solidarity, but for many displaced families, the holy month is being observed in exile, anxiety, and uncertainty.

The Secours Populaire is calling for increased financial support to its local partners, emphasizing that their ability to respond effectively depends on available resources. The organization is seeking donations to provide rapid, targeted assistance that respects local needs and realities.

Financial donations can be sent to Secours Populaire Français in all departments or to 9/11 rue Froissart, BP 3303, 75123 Paris Cedex 03. Donations can too be made online at don.secourspopulaire.fr/orient, with the designation “Urgence au Proche et au Moyen-Orient.”
