WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Jets return to Canada Life Centre tonight to host the New York Rangers, continuing their eight-game homestand. Coming off a frustrating 4-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, the Jets aim to rediscover their offensive rhythm against a Rangers team that has shown resilience despite a challenging season.
The defeat to Anaheim marked the Jets’ first regulation loss in seven games, a skid broken by a particularly quiet offensive performance where they managed a season-low 13 shots on goal. Despite the setback, Winnipeg has posted a 3-1 record thus far on this extended stretch at home. The team is focused on maintaining a positive trajectory as the playoff race intensifies.
“Yeah, I would say any time you can get six wins in eight games, that’s a pretty successful span of hockey. Obviously, this time of year is really hard,” said Jets forward Cole Perfetti. “Wins don’t approach easy, so any time we can get two points it’s huge. Obviously last night didn’t go the way we wanted, but we’ve had a pretty good start coming out of the break. We’ve just got to keep this going.”
The Jets had been playing some of their best hockey of the season prior to Tuesday’s contest, making the lack of offensive output against the Ducks particularly disheartening. Players acknowledged the require to return to their previous form. Gus Nyquist emphasized the importance of generating more shot attempts, stating, “Obviously we didn’t play our best game, and we know we have better than that. We’ve had a good stretch here of playing some good hockey, so we’ve just got to get back to that. Shots, it is what it is.” He added, “There’s a lot of teams in this league that their system is just throwing pucks on net and you end up with 40 shots. But how dangerous are some? But for sure, walking away with 13 shots, I think it was 13, it’s not enough and something we have to change for next game.”
Playoff Picture Remains Tight
Despite the loss, the Jets’ playoff hopes remain within reach. A Tuesday night loss by the Seattle Kraken meant Winnipeg didn’t lose any ground in the Western Conference standings, remaining five points out of a playoff spot. According to Moneypuck.com, the Jets currently have an 8.5% chance of making the postseason. Nyquist acknowledged the importance of capitalizing on opportunities, saying, “Yeah, I guess that’s a positive. But in saying that, those are the games you’ve got to win to catch up. Obviously, we’re not further from it, but we’re not closer either. And there’s a time limit on those games. We’ve got only so many games left. So, we’ll flush that one out and get ready for tomorrow.”
Rangers Present a Challenge
The Jets will face a New York Rangers team currently experiencing a season that has fallen short of expectations. The Rangers are last in the Eastern Conference, but have won their last two games, including a 4-0 shutout victory over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. Perfetti noted the Rangers’ continued competitiveness, stating, “So, there’s no quit in their locker room, they’re playing for their pride, and everything. It’s going to be a hard game. They’ve been pretty decent on the road. Just got to stick to our game, play our game, like we have been the last few, and we’ll be alright.”
The Jets will need to focus on their own game plan and execute effectively to secure a win against a determined Rangers squad. Fans can tune in to “The Check In” at 12:30 CT with Sara and Jamie for pre-game coverage.
As the Jets navigate the final stretch of the season, each game carries significant weight. Tonight’s matchup against the Rangers presents an opportunity to regain momentum and solidify their position in the playoff conversation. The team’s ability to generate offense and capitalize on scoring chances will be crucial as they strive to reach their postseason goals.
