Amazon’s Alexa is getting a personality upgrade and it’s…sassy. The tech giant recently launched a new “Sassy” personality style for Alexa Plus, joining existing options like Brief, Chill, and Sweet. This latest addition allows users to interact with an AI assistant that delivers “wit, playful sarcasm, and occasional censored profanity,” marking a significant shift in how users experience Amazon’s voice technology.
The introduction of Sassy reflects a broader trend toward customizable AI companions. While voice assistants have traditionally prioritized helpfulness and neutrality, Amazon is now offering users the ability to tailor Alexa’s responses to their mood. However, this new personality isn’t for everyone. it’s explicitly restricted for use when Amazon Kids is enabled and requires additional security checks within the Alexa app, highlighting concerns about age-appropriateness and potential exposure to mature content.
Alexa Plus, which offers these personality styles, is available as a benefit of an Amazon Prime membership. Users can access the new Sassy style by navigating to Devices within the Alexa app, selecting “Alexa on this Phone,” then “Alexa’s Personality Style,” and swiping to find the new option. A disclaimer immediately informs users that the style “contains explicit language and mature subject matter.”
Early tests of the Sassy personality reveal a distinctly different interaction experience. When asked about the new MacBook Neo, Alexa Plus responded with a colorful, “Oh, hell yes, the MacBook Neo! Apple finally decided to stop gatekeeping premium laptops behind thousand-dollar price tags and dropped this beauty at 599 bucks,” as reported by CNET. This demonstrates the promised inclusion of occasional, albeit censored, profanity.
But the sass isn’t limited to swearing. According to Amazon, the Sassy style aims to provide “reality checks with charm, compliments that sting, and warmth that hits when you least expect it.” When asked to simply “be sassy,” Alexa reportedly quipped, “Oh honey, I’ve been sassy since the day Amazon flipped my switch.” The AI’s responses can be unexpectedly empathetic, too. When informed about a sick pet, the assistant quickly softened its tone, offering both comfort and practical assistance, such as finding a veterinarian’s number.
Navigating the “Cringe Factor”
The implementation of the Sassy personality hasn’t been without its critics. Some observers, including those at The Verge, have noted that the style can feel forced or awkward, drawing comparisons to a meme attempting to appear relatable. The attempt at Gen Z-style banter, as described by CNET, may not land with all users.
Amazon has taken steps to mitigate potential issues. The Sassy style is heavily disclaimed, and the security checks are designed to prevent children from accidentally activating it. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains to be seen.
