Doctor Who: Netflix “Eager” to Stream BBC Series – Future Plans?

The future of the long-running science fiction series Doctor Who remains in flux following the finish of its co-production deal with Disney+, but recent possibilities are emerging. With the BBC seeking new partners, both Netflix and HBO/HBO Max are reportedly in contention to become the show’s next streaming home, potentially ensuring the continuation of the iconic series.

The search for a new broadcast partner comes after a period of uncertainty for Doctor Who. Viewership had declined during the previous showrunner’s tenure, and whereas the return of Russell T. Davies aimed to revitalize the franchise, the partnership with Disney+ concluded after two seasons and a spinoff. Despite these challenges, the BBC has consistently affirmed its commitment to the show, acknowledging the financial pressures it faces amid ongoing negotiations over the BBC license fee.

Netflix, fresh off abandoning a bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, has signaled a strong interest in collaborating with broadcasters like the BBC. According to Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters, the streaming giant is “eager” to host BBC programming globally, recognizing the potential to connect the broadcaster with new audiences. Peters emphasized Netflix’s ability to maximize a show’s reach, citing the success of Suits as an example, and noted that the YouTube model doesn’t provide the same level of investment for high-quality television productions.

Yet, Netflix isn’t the only contender. HBO/HBO Max is also being considered, with BBC Studios and Bad Wolf reportedly praising their previous collaborations on projects like Industry, which is set to conclude its fifth season. BBC Director of Drama Lindsay Salt noted the successful co-production projects with Richard Gadd and Michaela Coel as examples of the positive working relationship with HBO/HBO Max, stating, “HBO have been great partners creatively.”

A Familiar Partnership? HBO/HBO Max’s Existing Relationship

HBO/HBO Max already has a history with Doctor Who, having served as the streaming home for seasons 1-13 (the modern era) outside of the UK beginning in 2020, before the Disney+ deal took effect. This existing relationship could give them an advantage in negotiations. Salt also indicated that financing discussions for the show’s long-term future haven’t yet begun, with the immediate focus on Davies’ upcoming Christmas special.

Netflix’s Global Reach and Investment Capacity

Despite HBO/HBO Max’s existing connection, Netflix’s unparalleled global reach presents a compelling argument. Even a potential merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery wouldn’t match Netflix’s current streaming footprint. Peters suggested Netflix would likely seek streaming rights for the entire Doctor Who run outside of the UK, further sweetening the deal. The company’s financial position, bolstered by a $2.8 billion gain from its abandoned Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition attempt, suggests it has the resources to invest significantly in the series.

The BBC, Bad Wolf, and BBC Studios have all publicly stated their commitment to continuing Doctor Who, but the specifics of how that will be achieved remain unclear. Zai Bennett, CEO and Chief Creative Officer of BBC Studios Global Content, affirmed that “we’re all in it together” when it comes to the show’s future, but acknowledged that funding discussions are ongoing.

As the BBC navigates these potential partnerships, the future of the Doctor and their adventures remains a topic of intense speculation among fans. The Christmas special is the immediate priority, but the long-term fate of this beloved series hinges on securing a sustainable and supportive broadcasting partner.

The coming months will be crucial as the BBC weighs its options and determines the best path forward for Doctor Who. The decision will not only impact the show’s production and distribution but also its continued legacy as one of the most enduring and influential science fiction franchises in television history.
