Detroit: Ataque a Sinagoga Israel – Seguridad Abate al Asaltante

A gunman driving a vehicle crashed into Temple Israel, one of the largest synagogues in the United States, in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on March 12, 2026. The attacker was fatally shot by security personnel after ramming the building, which similarly houses a preschool, according to authorities. The incident sparked a large law enforcement response and a temporary lockdown of the area, raising concerns about rising antisemitism and security at religious institutions.

The suspect, identified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a U.S. Citizen originally from Lebanon, died at the scene. A security guard was injured in the attack but is expected to recover. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard stated that the suspect “was traveling with a purpose” through the synagogue’s interior, and that something in the vehicle ignited after the crash. The FBI is investigating the incident as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.”

Authorities responded to reports of a vehicle crashing into the synagogue around lunchtime. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office evacuated the building, and parents rushed to collect their children from the early childhood center located within the complex. The West Bloomfield School District initiated an emergency closure in response to the situation. No children or staff were injured during the attack, officials confirmed.

Increased Security Concerns Following Global Events

The attack on Temple Israel comes amid heightened global tensions and increased security concerns at Jewish institutions worldwide. Synagogues have been on alert and bolstering security measures since the February 28th exchange of missile launches between the United States and Israel and Iran. The FBI had previously warned of potential drone attacks targeting locations in California by Iranian agents.

Recent incidents, including an attack on an Orthodox synagogue in Manchester, England, during Yom Kippur – where a man fatally stabbed two people before being shot by police – have underscored the vulnerability of Jewish communities. In Fresh York City, two men carrying explosives were reportedly inspired by ISIS and brought them to a protest, according to investigators. Following the West Bloomfield attack, the New York Police Department (NYPD) increased patrols at Jewish centers across the five boroughs.

Temple Israel: A Large and Active Congregation

Temple Israel, a Reform synagogue located at 5725 Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, has approximately 12,000 members, according to its website. The synagogue offers educational programs for families and adults and describes its mission as “creating a building community through the lens of Reform Judaism.” In 2008, MLive Media Group reported that Temple Israel was the largest Jewish congregation in the United States. As of 2012, the congregation claimed to be the largest in North America, with 3,383 families in its membership.

Following the attack, the Jewish Federation of Detroit initially recommended that all Jewish organizations in the area implement lockdown protocols. These protocols were later lifted. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement expressing her distress and affirming that the Jewish community “should be able to live and practice their faith in peace.”

The investigation into the motive behind the attack is ongoing. Authorities are working to determine Ghazali’s background and any potential connections to extremist groups. A neighbor told the Detroit Free Press that Ghazali had recently experienced the loss of family members in an Israeli strike in Lebanon.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. The attack serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat of violence against religious institutions and the importance of vigilance and security measures.
