President Donald Trump announced Friday evening that U.S. Forces had conducted a large-scale bombing raid targeting military facilities on Kharg Island, a strategically vital Iranian island in the Persian Gulf. “Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Whereas emphasizing the destruction of military targets, Trump stated that he had deliberately refrained from striking the island’s oil infrastructure “for reasons of decency.” However, he issued a stark warning: “should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision.”
Kharg Island serves as Iran’s primary oil export terminal, handling approximately 950 million barrels of crude oil annually, and is critical to the Iranian economy. Located just 15 miles off the Iranian mainland, the island is a key component of Iran’s energy infrastructure. The strikes come as Tehran has disrupted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil and gas shipments, in response to the ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel, which began nearly two weeks ago.
The disruption of traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20 percent of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas normally travels, has already impacted global oil prices. Brent crude, the international benchmark, settled at over $100 a barrel on Friday, a more than 40 percent increase since the conflict began in late February.
The decision to strike Kharg Island, while stopping short of a full seizure, has been the subject of internal debate. Experts have previously cautioned against seizing the island, citing potential risks. Gregory Brew, an Iran expert and senior analyst with Eurasia Group, noted that while seizing Kharg could impede Iranian oil exports and provide a political win for Trump, it wouldn’t eliminate Iran’s export capabilities entirely. Iran has alternative export facilities, including a terminal in Jask, east of the Strait of Hormuz, which it has been utilizing more frequently.
Brew likewise highlighted the dangers of a potential ground operation on Iranian territory, warning that it could trigger a “very aggressive” response from Iran and expose U.S. Troops to “drone and missile fire.”
The Pentagon has responded to the escalating situation by ordering additional troops and warships to the region, including the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli and approximately 2,500 Marines, providing Trump with further military options.
Trump’s interest in Kharg Island dates back decades, a fact brought up by Fox News Radio host Brian Kilmeade during an interview with the former president on Thursday. Kilmeade directly asked Trump if he was considering seizing the island. Trump responded with irritation, questioning the appropriateness of the question and stating, “It’s not high on the list…But it’s one of so many different things, and I can change my mind in seconds.” He further dismissed the question as “foolish” and expressed reluctance to reveal his strategic considerations.
