A Far North electrician is reeling after thieves stole his work vehicle and tools, along with two family cars, in a brazen burglary earlier this month. The incident, which occurred at a rural property near Tauranga Bay, has left the tradesman facing significant disruption to his business and a substantial financial loss. The theft highlights the vulnerability of tradespeople to opportunistic crime and the impact such incidents can have on small businesses and families.
John Archer discovered the theft on the morning of March 8th, after waking up to discover three vehicles missing from his property. According to Archer, the thieves arrived in a ute, which they abandoned in a ditch and set on fire before making off with his silver Mitsubishi Challenger registration GMN41, a white Toyota RAV4 registration BDA937, and a silver Mazda Athena registration HFJ59. The incident is currently under investigation by police.
The stolen Mitsubishi Challenger was particularly devastating as it contained all of Archer’s essential tools for his electrical business. “One of the vehicles stolen he used for work and it had all his tools in it,” Archer stated. Beyond the professional impact, the theft also affected his family, as one of the stolen vehicles was being used to teach his daughter how to drive. He has filed an insurance claim, but coverage is limited to the work vehicle itself, leaving him to bear the cost of replacing his tools and the other two cars.
Archer suspects the burglary is connected to previous, smaller incidents at his property. “I have had other small burglaries before, where things like a chainsaw and other small things were taken,” he explained. “It’s a gravel driveway and I am on the top of a hill, so I would normally see headlights or hear a vehicle coming up the driveway. That’s why I think they probably walked in first and had a glance around.”
Community Rallies to Support Local Tradesman
The local community has quickly mobilized to support Archer in the wake of the theft. A Givealittle page has been established to help him replace his tools and mitigate the financial impact of the loss. The fundraising effort has already exceeded its $2,500 goal, raising over $3,700 as of today, March 14, 2026.
“He appreciates it and ‘anything that comes out of it is excellent’,” according to reports. The outpouring of support demonstrates the strong sense of community in the Far North and the willingness of residents to help those in need.
Police Investigation Underway
Mid/Far North area prevention manager Senior Sergeant Clem Armstrong confirmed that police are actively investigating the incident. “Police are investigating and anyone with more information is asked to update police online or call 105 using the reference number 260308/6555,” Armstrong said. Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in their investigation and the recovery of the stolen vehicles and tools.
This incident follows a separate police operation in Tauranga in October 2025, where an armed, fleeing driver was apprehended after a 15-kilometer pursuit involving the use of sponge rounds and a taser, as reported by Archyde. While unrelated to the current case, it underscores the ongoing efforts of Bay of Plenty Police to address criminal activity in the region.
The investigation into the Tauranga Bay burglary is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to reach forward. The recovery of the stolen vehicles and tools, and the apprehension of those responsible, remain a priority for local law enforcement.
As the investigation continues, the community remains focused on supporting John Archer and helping him acquire back on his feet. The swift response and generosity of local residents offer a glimmer of hope amidst a difficult situation.
