The highly anticipated continuation of the cult classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer will not be moving forward at Hulu. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was set to reprise her iconic role as Buffy Summers, shared the news with fans on Saturday, confirming the project – tentatively titled Buffy: Fresh Sunnydale – has been scrapped. The cancellation comes after over a year of development and a filmed pilot episode, leaving many fans disappointed.
Gellar took to Instagram to deliver the news directly to the show’s devoted fanbase. While she didn’t elaborate on the reasons behind Hulu’s decision, she expressed gratitude to Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, who was attached to the reboot. “I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” Gellar wrote. “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale.”
The planned series aimed to blend the familiar world of Sunnydale with a new generation of vampire slayers. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’s Ryan Kiera Armstrong was cast as the new Slayer, with Gellar’s Buffy Summers intended to serve as a mentor figure. The storyline would have followed Armstrong’s character navigating high school while honing her monster-fighting skills, all under the guidance of the seasoned veteran.
News of the cancellation follows weeks of speculation regarding the show’s fate. According to Deadline, sources described the pilot as “not perfect,” suggesting Zhao’s artistic sensibility may not have been the ideal fit for the reboot. Zhao, known for critically acclaimed films like Nomadland and Hamnet (which has received eight Oscar nominations), brought a unique vision to the project, but Hulu opted for a different path.
Gellar had been actively involved in the reboot process, expressing excitement about Zhao’s approach. She recently spoke at the SXSW premiere of Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, sharing her enthusiasm for Zhao’s “passion, and her reasoning for wanting to do it, and why now, and why it is necessary” that convinced her to revisit the role. She was reportedly surprised by Hulu’s decision, learning of it Friday night, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Despite shelving the current iteration, Hulu remains interested in the Buffy intellectual property. The streaming service plans to “regroup and mull a possible new incarnation of the beloved franchise,” according to Deadline. This suggests that the story of Buffy the Vampire Slayer may not be over, but a different approach will be needed to bring it back to the screen.
Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase in the original series, previously expressed hope for a return to the Buffy universe, telling IGN she felt her character’s storyline deserved a more satisfying conclusion after what she described as an “unjust” end.
Gellar’s Instagram post ended on a hopeful note, assuring fans that even if the apocalypse arrives, she’s still available to help. “And I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me,” she wrote.
While this particular revival won’t see the light of day, the enduring popularity of Buffy the Vampire Slayer suggests that the Slayer’s story will continue to resonate with audiences for years to come. Hulu’s continued interest in the franchise indicates that further attempts to reimagine the series are likely, though the form those future projects will take remains to be seen.
