Uganda Handball: Success Against the Odds

Sheila Agonzibwa’s dedication to Ugandan handball has been recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award, a testament to years of tireless work building the sport in a nation where resources are often scarce. The award, presented yesterday, acknowledges not just her administrative skills but also her unwavering commitment to developing handball from the grassroots level up.

Running a national sports federation in a country like Uganda presents unique challenges. Limited funding, infrastructure constraints, and a constant need for innovation are commonplace. Agonzibwa, as President of the Uganda Handball Federation (UHF), has consistently navigated these hurdles, fostering a growing handball community and providing opportunities for young athletes to excel. Her leadership has been instrumental in Uganda’s increasing participation in regional and continental competitions.

Agonzibwa’s tenure has seen significant strides in Ugandan handball. The UHF, under her guidance, secured the right to host the Zone V Youth (U18) and Youth (U20) Handball Championship in April 2025 at the Old Kampala Sports Arena, a major achievement for the sport in the country [Uganda Handball Federation]. This tournament will bring together top youth handball teams from across East Africa, including Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda itself, providing a platform to showcase emerging talent.

A History of Development

The Uganda Handball Federation, established and registered with the National Council of Sports, is affiliated with the International Handball Federation (IHF) [IHF]. Agonzibwa’s leadership extends beyond simply organizing tournaments. She has focused on technical development programs, exemplified by the IHF License B certification achieved by Mr. Orotin Remie Jimmy, demonstrating a commitment to raising the standard of coaching within the country [Uganda Handball Federation].

In 2023, the Police Handball Club Women and the UPDF Handball Team Men emerged as champions in their respective categories of the Uganda National Super League championship, showcasing the growing competitiveness of the domestic league [Uganda Handball Federation]. This success is a direct result of the UHF’s efforts to promote and support handball at all levels.

Uganda on the Continental Stage

The Ugandan men’s national handball team is preparing for its debut appearance at the 2026 CAHB African Men’s Handball Championship, where they will compete against the continent’s best teams. They are currently ranked 16th in the competition [Wikipedia]. This participation marks a significant milestone for Ugandan handball and reflects Agonzibwa’s long-term vision for the sport’s growth.

The challenges are undeniable. As one observer noted, running handball in countries without massive budgets is exceptionally tough. Yet, Uganda consistently achieves so much with limited resources, a testament to the dedication of individuals like Sheila Agonzibwa.

Looking Ahead

With the 2026 African Men’s Handball Championship on the horizon and continued efforts to develop youth programs, the future of Ugandan handball appears bright. Agonzibwa’s Lifetime Achievement Award is not just a recognition of past accomplishments, but also a symbol of hope and inspiration for the next generation of handball players and administrators in Uganda.
