Hamburg is in mourning following the death of Hans-Joachim Nöh, a highly respected figure at the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper, affectionately known as “Dr. Text” by his colleagues. Nöh passed away on March 1st, just seventeen days before his 66th birthday, after a battle with cancer.
A meticulous editor and staunch defender of journalistic accuracy, Nöh dedicated decades to refining the function of others. His passing leaves a significant void in the world of German journalism, remembered not only for his sharp eye for detail but also for his unwavering commitment to factual reporting and linguistic precision.
A Career Dedicated to Precision
Nöh’s career began after studying History and Political Science, with journalistic postings in Münster and Flensburg. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a respected expert in education and health reporting at “Welt am Sonntag” before joining the Hamburger Abendblatt in 2008. It was at the Abendblatt that he earned the nickname “Dr. Text” from a fellow editor, a testament to his rigorous approach to manuscript review.
Colleagues recall Nöh’s relentless pursuit of accuracy. He didn’t simply correct errors; he questioned assumptions, challenged imprecise language, and held writers to the highest standards. A concert review claiming a sold-out performance would be met with a demand for proof, and a phrase like “standing ovation” would prompt the question, “Have you actually seen an ovation that was standing?” He was a guardian of Hamburg’s linguistic traditions, insisting on “Sonnabend” instead of “Samstag” and “mehr als 100 Gäste” rather than “über 100 Gäste.”
Beyond Grammar: A Commitment to Facts and Family
Nöh’s dedication extended beyond mere grammatical correctness. He prioritized factual accuracy above all else, meticulously verifying distances between cities and scrutinizing even the most seemingly minor details. His thoroughness often required multiple revisions of articles, each iteration improved by his insightful feedback.
Despite his professional rigor, Nöh was deeply devoted to his family. A photograph of his wife and daughters always adorned his desk, serving as a constant reminder of what mattered most. He found solace in nature, even continuing to pursue his passion for wildlife conservation despite his illness. He used a thermal imaging drone to locate deer fawns before fields were mowed, contributing to the work of the Schmalfelder Förderverein für Wildtierrettung and saving countless young animals.
A Life Filled with Passions
Nöh’s intellectual curiosity extended beyond journalism. His home was filled with books by renowned German authors like Heinrich, Thomas and Klaus Mann, Siegfried Lenz, and Günter Grass. After leaving the Abendblatt, he continued his literary pursuits by attending seminars and lectures in German Literature at the University of Hamburg. He also fulfilled a long-held dream by obtaining his motorboat license, often seen navigating the Elbe River with the Elbphilharmonie as a backdrop. A YouTube channel dedicated to his thoughts and political analysis, “Hajos Gedanken,” also provided a platform for his insights.
Even as cancer progressed, Nöh remained optimistic, stating, “Beim UKE bin ich in den besten Händen. Die tun alles für mich” (“I am in the best hands at UKE. They are doing everything for me”). He continued to work on his home, building a dedicated reading and writing space, demonstrating his unwavering spirit and determination.
In his final weeks, Nöh’s energy waned, and communication shifted to phone calls. A final visit in February took place at the Hospiz an der Helenenstraße in Altona, where he requested an ice-cold cola and listened to Dire Straits, “Sultans of Swing,” a favorite band. He passed away just days later, on March 1st.
Hans-Joachim Nöh’s legacy extends far beyond his meticulous editing. He was a dedicated journalist, a passionate conservationist, a loving family man, and a true champion of accuracy and integrity in a rapidly changing media landscape. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
