Massapequa, NY – Before facing a national television audience on Monday’s episode of “American Idol,” Long Island native Jesse Findling, 20, returned to his roots, performing for students at Massapequa High School. The visit, reported by Newsday and Patch, offered a moment of connection with his community as he navigates the competition.
Findling, a 2023 graduate of Massapequa High School currently studying Biology at Binghamton University, is among the top 20 contestants on the show. His performance at the school included a question-and-answer session with music students and a concert for the student body, all while the high school was decorated with signs urging viewers to “Vote For Jesse,” according to Patch.
The return to his alma mater resonated deeply with Findling. “Talking to you guys, coming back here, little me when I was in high school — this was something I never thought I would do,” he shared with students and staff, as reported by Newsday. He acknowledged the realities of the competition, noting the demanding schedule – sometimes requiring 12-hour days – and the emotional toll it takes on contestants.
Despite the pressures, Findling emphasized the importance of perseverance. “There’s a lot of waiting for me to be only on screen five minutes,” he said, adding that he’s witnessed “a lot of breakdowns” among his peers. His approach, he explained, is to focus on the performance itself: “My head space is, I’m just going to go and sing, and whatever happens, happens.”
A Familiar Face Returns to the Stage
Stephanie Guida, a senior at Massapequa High School, recalled seeing Findling perform in the school’s production of “Footloose” when she was a freshman. “At that point, he was kind of just like everyone else on stage, there were so many talented people,” Guida told Newsday. But, she noted a significant difference in his current performances, describing “such a strong tone to his voice, he sings with so much passion and emotion… You could just experience his love for what he does.”
Gina Aspetti, Findling’s music teacher from kindergarten through fifth grade at East Lake Elementary School, accompanied him on piano during his performance Monday. Aspetti, who still teaches at East Lake, described him as “always very musical, but shy,” and expressed her joy at seeing his courage to share his gift, according to Newsday. She highlighted his natural talent for breath control, a skill she found demanding to teach other students.
Findling’s talent was recognized early on. Vincent Green, the Massapequa district’s director of fine and performing arts, likened the moment a talent scout discovered Findling’s performance online to a “lightning strike,” given the sheer volume of content uploaded to social media platforms, as reported by Newsday.
Navigating the Competition and Staying Grounded
While Findling is not currently permitted to grant interviews, details about his personal life have emerged, including a stutter that doesn’t affect his singing, a close relationship with his siblings who also sing, and a temporary pause on his studies at Binghamton University, as highlighted on “American Idol.” His younger brother, Jack, a 10th grader at Massapequa, observed that despite the whirlwind of the competition, Jesse remains true to himself: “A lot of contestants go on that show and arrive out a completely different person… He’s really just being himself, and it shows.”
Before his performance at the high school, Findling apologized for his song selection, describing it as “super sad,” and noting his tendency to gravitate towards melancholic tunes. He sang with emotion, receiving a warm response from the audience, and then took time to connect with those who knew him before his rise to national prominence.
Findling’s journey on “American Idol” continues, with viewer voting now underway to determine which contestants will advance. The voting period began Monday and concludes Tuesday, offering fans a chance to support the Massapequa Park native as he pursues his musical dreams. News 12 Long Island reported that Findling impressed judges last week with his rendition of “Photograph” by Ed Sheeran.
As Findling progresses through the competition, his story serves as an inspiration to students and a source of pride for the Massapequa community. The next episode of “American Idol” will reveal which contestants will move forward, based on the votes received from viewers across the country.
