Armand Duplantis Wins 4th World Indoor Pole Vault Title | Torun 2024

Armand Duplantis of Sweden secured his fourth consecutive World Indoor Championship title in pole vault on Saturday, setting a new competition record of 6.25 meters. The victory, however, was far from straightforward, as he faced a determined challenge from Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis, requiring a tactical battle to claim the gold medal in Torun.

The competition unfolded differently than Duplantis’ recent performance in Uppsala, where Karalis had struggled against the Swedish vaulter. This time, Karalis presented a significant obstacle, pushing Duplantis to his limits. Karalis, who earlier this year achieved a jump of 6.17 meters – a mark surpassed only by Duplantis in pole vault history – employed a strategic approach that nearly upset the reigning champion.

After successfully clearing 6.05 meters on his first attempt, Karalis strategically passed on both the 6.10 and 6.15 meter heights. This forced Duplantis, who had already cleared those heights, to continue jumping, raising the stakes and extending the competition. Duplantis was pushed to attempt 6.20 meters, a height Karalis nearly matched, and both vaulters came close to clearing 6.25 meters before the bar was raised.

While Karalis faltered on two attempts at 6.25 meters, Duplantis successfully cleared the height, securing his fourth consecutive World Indoor Championship title. The victory was described as his most challenging yet, a testament to Karalis’ resilience and tactical acumen. Karalis ultimately took the silver medal with a jump of 6.05 meters.

Australia’s Kurtis Marschall completed the podium, earning the bronze medal with a jump of 6.00 meters, highlighting the high caliber of competition in the final. Duplantis’ achievement places him alongside the legendary Sergey Bubka, as both athletes have now won four World Indoor Championship titles in pole vault.

Bubka achieved his four titles over a ten-year period, from the 1985 World Championships in Paris to the 1995 Championships in Barcelona. Duplantis, however, has accomplished the same feat in just four consecutive championships, demonstrating a remarkable period of dominance in the sport. The win further solidifies Duplantis’ position as a leading contender to become the greatest pole vaulter of all time.
