A shop in Barnsley has been ordered to close for three months after authorities discovered thousands of illegal cigarettes and tobacco products on the premises. The closure, issued by Barnsley Magistrates’ Court, underscores a growing crackdown on the sale of illicit goods and the associated risks to public health and safety.
The business, Mr. Blue, located at 30 Doncaster Road, Goldthorpe (S63 9HL), was found to be selling tobacco products that failed to meet UK safety regulations, including missing legally required health warnings. This action follows a series of visits from Barnsley Metropolitan District Council’s Trading Standards team, who have been working to protect residents from potentially dangerous and non-compliant products. The case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat the illegal tobacco trade in the region.
Initial Findings and Subsequent Raids
The investigation began in January when Trading Standards Officers initially discovered 7,400 illegal cigarettes and ten pouches of hand-rolling tobacco during a routine visit. A follow-up visit later that month revealed a hidden concealment containing an additional 3,680 illegal cigarettes and 47 non-compliant pouches of hand-rolling tobacco. The total number of illegal cigarettes seized exceeds 11,000, according to the Barnsley Council news release.
The illegal products were reportedly being sold for as little as £5. A test purchase conducted in February further confirmed the shop was continuing to sell these illicit items. The investigation also revealed that the business was not adhering to the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016.
Closure Order and Legal Basis
The three-month closure order was granted under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, which allows local authorities to seek court orders to shut down businesses engaged in criminal behavior and causing a public nuisance. This legislation provides a framework for preventing such activities from continuing or recurring. The court’s decision demonstrates the commitment to prioritizing public safety and enforcing key legislation designed to safeguard communities.
Similar enforcement actions have been taken recently in the surrounding areas. A shop in Rotherham was also under investigation for selling illegal cigarettes and tobacco, as reported by the Barnsley Chronicle. A convenience store, Lidia Mini Market on Sheffield Road in Barnsley, was ordered to close for three months in December 2025 after investigators found hundreds of thousands of illegal cigarettes, unsafe food products, and banned vapes, according to the BBC.
Broader Crackdown on Illegal Goods
This case is part of a wider effort by South Yorkshire Police and local councils to disrupt the supply of illegal goods. A recent covert operation in Barnsley resulted in the seizure of over 200,000 cigarettes, 7,000 packs of tobacco, over 8,000 illegal vapes, and more than £40,000 in cash, as detailed by South Yorkshire Police on Facebook. These operations aim to protect consumers from potentially harmful products and to tackle the criminal networks involved in their distribution.
The Barnsley Council’s Trading Standards team emphasized their commitment to taking action against businesses that break the law and endanger public health. The closure order for Mr. Blue serves as a clear message that such activities will not be tolerated.
As the three-month closure order takes effect, authorities will continue to monitor the situation and investigate any potential breaches. The focus remains on protecting the health and safety of the Barnsley community and preventing the sale of illegal tobacco products.
