COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Logan-Rogersville Wildcats secured their first Missouri Class 4 boys basketball state championship since 1982 on Saturday, defeating Clayton 72-36 at Mizzou Arena. The dominant performance capped off a remarkable season for the Wildcats, finishing with a 29-3 record and bringing the coveted trophy back to Logan-Rogersville after a 44-year drought. This historic win marks a significant achievement for the program and the community.
The Wildcats’ victory wasn’t just about the final score; it was a display of all-around team excellence. Four of Logan-Rogersville’s five starters scored in double figures, showcasing a balanced offensive attack that proved too much for Clayton to handle. Sophomore Titus Moore led the charge with 20 points, although senior Sutton Shook contributed 16. Junior Chase Branham added 15, and sophomore Jack Sutherland rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. The team’s success builds on a strong showing in the semi-finals, where they defeated Vashon 74-60, a six-time state champion.
Dominating First Half Sets the Tone
Logan-Rogersville established control early, racing to a 42-point first half. This early lead allowed the Wildcats to dictate the pace of the game and maintain a comfortable margin throughout the second half. According to head coach John Schaefer, the team initially appeared “a little flat” after a high-energy game the previous night, but quickly found their rhythm and began to pull away. “Once we got settled in and locked in, we started to separate and got the stops we needed,” Schaefer said.
The championship game wasn’t just a victory for the team, but a personal milestone for several players. Indiana commit Chase Branham, whose brother Jake Branham had previously fallen short of a state title with Springfield Catholic in 2019, expressed the significance of the win. “I mean, it just means everything,” Branham said. “It’s something I can check off my list and finally relax and realize that I’m a state champion.”
A Season of Excellence Culminates in Championship
The Wildcats’ journey to the state championship wasn’t without its challenges. Their 29-3 record reflects a season of consistent performance and resilience. Their biggest test came in the semi-final against Vashon, where they outscored the perennial state champions. Clayton, making their first appearance in a state title game, finished the season with a 24-8 record.
The celebration following the final buzzer was a testament to the hard function and dedication of the players and coaching staff. Images captured by Michael Gulledge present the team posing with the Class 4 state championship trophy at Mizzou Arena, a moment etched in the memories of the players, coaches, and fans alike.
Looking Ahead
With the 2026 Class 4 state championship secured, Logan-Rogersville looks to build on this success in the coming years. The team’s strong core of young talent, combined with experienced leadership, positions them for continued contention. The focus will now shift to maintaining the program’s momentum and inspiring future generations of Wildcats basketball players.
