COVID Break Helped South Africa’s Connor Esterhuizen Find His Cricket Path | ESPN Cricinfo

Wellington, New Zealand – For many, the Covid-19 pandemic represented a period of disruption and uncertainty. But for Connor Esterhuizen, South Africa’s emerging wicketkeeper-batter, the global pause proved to be a pivotal moment, offering a chance for reflection and a pathway to international cricket. The 24-year-traditional credits the break in play with reigniting his passion for the game and setting him on the course that led to a starring role in the ongoing T20 series against New Zealand.

Esterhuizen’s recent form has been a bright spot for South Africa, particularly his maiden half-century in the fourth T20I on Sunday. His 57 off 36 balls was crucial in securing a 19-run victory for the Proteas, leveling the five-match series at 2-2. The series, played with a South African squad largely absent its first-choice players, has provided an opportunity for emerging talents like Esterhuizen to showcase their abilities on the international stage. This victory keeps the series alive, with a deciding match scheduled for Wednesday in Christchurch.

The journey wasn’t always straightforward for Esterhuizen. He openly admits to questioning his future in the sport prior to the pandemic. “Covid was extremely key for me. It was sort of a saving grace in cricketing terms,” he explained after the match in Wellington. “Before Covid, at the back-end of my school career, I didn’t make the teams that I wanted to and that I thought I was quality enough to make. I wasn’t sure if cricket was really for me or if I was good enough to play professionally or after school. And then Covid hit and it gave me a little bit of a break from the game.”

That break allowed him to rebuild his confidence and focus. He worked his way up through the ranks, starting with club and university cricket before earning a spot in the Lions B team. A breakthrough moment came in 2022 when he made his provincial debut for the Lions, scoring a match-winning 52 off 58 balls in a domestic one-day cup match. Since then, he has steadily progressed, representing the South African A side, notching four centuries in the first-class competition and featuring in the SA20 franchises MI Cape Town and Pretoria Capitals. ESPN details the changes in both squads for the fourth T20I.

From Doubt to Debut: Esterhuizen’s Rise

Esterhuizen’s ability to adapt and learn has been key to his success. He acknowledges the importance of both talent and the mental fortitude required to succeed at the highest level. “I’ve tried to take my game to another level. For most people the talent is always there, but it’s hard to use that talent and the decision-making that comes with it. That is the key the higher up you proceed in this game,” he said. He also emphasizes the necessitate to embrace failure as a learning opportunity. “The second thing is just how to deal with failures, because this game is a game of failures. And when you succeed, you need to take it in. How to deal with those failures the higher you go will stand you in good stead.”

His performance in New Zealand has been a mixed bag, with an unbeaten 45 anchoring a chase of 91 in the first match, followed by dismissals for 8 and 15 in the subsequent games as he attempted more aggressive shots. Though, his half-century in the fourth T20I demonstrated a more measured approach. “Whereas this innings I just tried to play what was in front of me, normal cricket shots, and waited for the ball in my area. That was the only difference,” he explained. He was the only batter on either side to surpass 32 runs in that match, highlighting his improved application and focus.

Looking Ahead: A Future in Proteas Colors?

With South Africa’s regular squad unavailable for this series, it remains to be seen how Esterhuizen will fit into the team’s long-term plans. However, his inclusion in this tour suggests he is firmly in the selectors’ thoughts. At 24, he has a promising future ahead of him, and he is currently the leading run-scorer for South Africa in this series. He is enjoying the experience and learning from every opportunity.

“I’ve loved every second of my first tour with the Proteas. The lessons I’d take are probably just how to deal with the pressure and the scrutiny,” he said. He credits coach Shukri Conrad with preparing the newcomers for the intense spotlight that comes with international cricket. “That’s the main message that coach Shuks said to us before the tour, especially the newcomers, that we will need to experience the pressure, the scrutiny and that everything’s looked at through a microscope.”

The series now hinges on the final match in Christchurch, where South Africa will aim to secure a series victory. Esterhuizen’s continued development will be crucial to the Proteas’ success, both in this series and in the future. His story serves as a reminder that even amidst challenging circumstances, opportunities can arise, and with dedication and resilience, dreams can be realized.
