Urban Water Challenges & Local Solutions | C40 Cities

Cities around the globe face escalating water-related risks, with major urban centers potentially facing $194 billion in annual costs due to climate-induced flooding and drought, according to a recent assessment by C40 Cities.

The findings, stemming from Phase One of C40’s Water Safe Cities project, highlight the growing vulnerability of urban populations to climate change impacts. More than half the world’s population currently resides in cities, making them focal points for the intensifying water crisis. The C40 network, comprised of 97 major cities, is now moving into Phase Two of the project, bolstered by a $3.64 million commitment from the Grundfos Foundation over the next three years.

The second phase will focus on accelerating implementation of water management strategies within C40 cities. This includes research into the combined effects of droughts and floods, assisting cities in setting specific water-related goals, and providing technical support for action plans. The program builds on existing C40 water networks, aiming to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among member cities.

The urgency of the situation is underscored by the increasing frequency and severity of water hazards. According to C40, these hazards are already reshaping daily life in cities worldwide, and without significant intervention, the risks will continue to escalate. The Water Safe Cities program is designed to assist cities proactively address these challenges and build resilience against both flooding and drought.

The Grundfos Foundation’s investment will be critical in supporting this perform, enabling C40 to map regional challenges and quantify the impacts of water-related risks. This data-driven approach aims to provide cities with the information they need to make informed decisions and prioritize effective solutions. The program’s components include undertaking research to understand the synergistic impacts of droughts and floods, supporting cities to establish goals and targets for urban water management, and providing technical assistance to support cities in implementing water actions.

C40 Cities is continuing to work with its member cities to address water climate hazards, with the next scheduled step being the continued implementation of Phase Two initiatives and the monitoring of progress towards established goals.
