Protein vs. Carbs: Experts Weigh In on Diet Trends & Healthy Eating

Protein is ubiquitous in the modern American diet. From protein-infused coffee to desserts marketed with a protein boost, grocery store shelves increasingly position the nutrient as synonymous with “healthy.” Simultaneously, social media influencers are promoting high-protein meal plans, often advising followers to reduce carbohydrate intake for weight loss, muscle preservation, or to manage the appetite-suppressing effects of GLP-1 medications. This shift in dietary focus coincides with the growing adoption of GLP-1 drugs and an expansion of protein-focused branding within the food industry.

The increased emphasis on protein, coupled with the popularity of low-carbohydrate diets, is raising concerns among nutrition experts about potential fiber deficiencies. While the recently released Dietary Guidelines for Americans emphasize limiting added sugars and refined grains, some interpret this as a blanket endorsement of lower-carbohydrate eating. But, experts caution that this interpretation overlooks the crucial role carbohydrates – particularly those found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains – play in a balanced and healthy diet.

Understanding Carbohydrates and Fiber

“I think it’s important for us to talk about what a carbohydrate is,” explained Florida registered dietitian nutritionist Lee Cotton. “There’s an illusion that it’s just pasta and croissants and doughnuts.” She argued that this perception ignores the fact that carbohydrates encompass a wide range of foods, including fiber-rich options that provide essential nutrients. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans specifically recommend prioritizing “fiber-rich whole grains” and “significantly reducing the consumption of highly processed, refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, ready-to-eat or packaged breakfast options, flour tortillas and crackers.”

The rise in low-carb messaging is closely linked to the increasing use of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. These drugs work by suppressing appetite and slowing gastric emptying, often leading to reduced caloric intake and, in clinical studies, significant weight loss and improved metabolic markers. However, some health professionals worry that relying on medication to control appetite may lead individuals to overlook the importance of balanced nutrition. “I believe in modern medicine,” Cotton said, “But with these medications, we are stepping away from really [noticing] how our bodies feel and that innate capability for our bodies to feel hunger and satiety.”

The “Golden Child” of Diet Culture

Protein has been elevated to what Cotton calls the “golden child of diet culture,” promoted as the most important macronutrient. She cautions against this singular focus, emphasizing that all nutrients are vital for overall health and wellness. This emphasis on protein, while not inherently negative, can overshadow the importance of other essential nutrients, including fiber.

The apparent tension reflects a broader debate about dietary guidance. While federal recommendations emphasize improving carbohydrate quality and overall eating patterns, many popular diets prioritize reducing total carbohydrate intake. Dallas-based nutritionist Whitney Stuart believes protein and carbohydrates work best in tandem. “When we talk about protein and carbohydrates, I believe they work best together rather than being treated equally,” she said. “Think of protein as the building block that helps you feel full, while carbohydrates – especially those high in fiber – provide essential energy, support your digestive health and help keep your metabolism on track.”

Prioritizing Fiber Intake

Stuart advocates for a shift in focus from low-carb diets to emphasizing high-fiber carbohydrates. “The real issue for many Americans isn’t that we eat too many carbs,” she stated, “It’s that we don’t get enough fiber.” Carlo Filippone, founder of the Chicken Pound meal prep company, suggests a “protein-first” approach to meal planning: “Fill your plate with protein, add veggies next and complex carbs last and least,” he advised. “Refined carbs should be a once-in-a-while indulgence.”

Clinicians have also raised concerns about potential muscle loss in patients who significantly reduce calorie intake without adequate protein consumption, a concern particularly relevant for those taking GLP-1 medications. Maintaining sufficient protein intake is crucial even as overall food consumption decreases. “The essence of a great nutrition pattern is adequacy, variety and balance when it comes to eating,” Cotton emphasized.

Cotton’s message is about restoring proportion. “Carbohydrates are not always the villain,” she said. “I think like anything else in life, it’s just particularly what your choices are and how they impact your health.”

As GLP-1 medications continue to reshape eating habits and the protein craze persists, understanding the importance of a balanced diet – one that prioritizes fiber-rich carbohydrates alongside adequate protein intake – will be crucial for maintaining long-term health and well-being. Further research is needed to fully understand the long-term effects of these dietary shifts and the potential impact on nutrient deficiencies.
