Quad has expanded its high-end Platina series with the introduction of the Platina CDT, a dedicated CD transport designed for audiophiles who still cherish their physical media collections. The latest component joins the existing Platina Integrated amplifier and Platina Stream network player, completing the top-tier lineup from the British audio manufacturer. This move signals a continued investment in optical disc technology, even as streaming services dominate the music landscape.
Unlike a conventional CD player which integrates both disc reading and digital-to-analogue conversion, the Platina CDT functions solely as a transport, extracting the digital signal from CDs. This allows users to pair it with their preferred external DAC – either a standalone unit or the DAC built into an amplifier like the Platina Integrated – for optimal sound quality. The focus on pure data retrieval is a key design principle, aiming to maximize the sonic potential of each disc.
The Platina CDT is engineered to seamlessly integrate with the Platina Integrated, which already features an ESS Sabre ES9038PRO DAC, according to Quad. The transport outputs digital audio via coaxial or TOSLINK connections, both of which are available on the Integrated amplifier. Quad emphasizes the build quality of the Platina CDT, sharing the steel chassis and anti-resonance feet found in its Platina siblings. Internally, Quad has implemented several features aimed at minimizing interference and maximizing accuracy. A temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) serves as the master clock for the servo and decoder section, powered by an isolated linear regulator to reduce jitter. Power supplies are separated for the motor, laser servo, decoder stage, and microcontroller/display, further isolating sensitive components. The unit utilizes a Noratel toroidal transformer.
Beyond Standard CDs and USB Playback
The Platina CDT supports standard Red Book CDs (16-bit/44.1kHz) as well as CD-R and CD-RW discs. Notably, it also includes a USB-A port that allows playback of digital audio files from USB storage devices, supporting FLAC, WAV, WMA, AAC, MP3, and APE formats at their native resolutions.
