ST. LOUIS – Fletcher Loyer’s efficient scoring performance propelled Purdue to a 79-69 victory over Miami (Fla.) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, securing the Boilermakers’ third consecutive trip to the Sweet 16. Loyer finished with a game-high 24 points, shooting 6-for-7 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range, adding eight free throws.
The win marks the seventh Sweet 16 appearance for Purdue in the last nine years, solidifying their status as a perennial contender in March Madness. Purdue (29-8) will face 11th-seeded Texas in the West Region semifinals Thursday in San Jose, California, a rematch of their 2022 second-round tournament clash. This victory also represents the 500th career win for Purdue head coach Matt Painter in his 21 seasons leading the Boilermakers.
While Loyer led the offensive charge, Trey Kaufman-Renn contributed a strong performance with 19 points and nine rebounds. Despite a challenging day from the field, Braden Smith, who recently broke the NCAA career record for assists, managed 12 points and eight assists and crucially, hit four free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
Miami (26-9) put up a fight, cutting an 11-point deficit to just four late in the game, but Purdue’s composure and Loyer’s clutch shooting proved too much to overcome. Shelton Henderson led the Hurricanes with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Malik Reneau added 16 points.
Loyer’s Efficiency Key to Purdue’s Success
Loyer’s performance was remarkably efficient, showcasing his ability to score in multiple ways. His ability to knock down shots from beyond the arc stretched the Miami defense, creating opportunities for his teammates. “We have a good team, we have good balance, and Braden is the guy that makes us move – and he sets things off,” Painter said. “I realize he’s frustrated, but we were able to win and advance, and now we can play another day.”
Painter Reaches Milestone Victory
The victory over Miami wasn’t just a Sweet 16 berth for Purdue; it was also a significant milestone for coach Matt Painter. Reaching 500 career wins, Painter is now just 12 victories shy of surpassing Gene Keady as Purdue’s all-time winningest coach. “They’ve put in so much in all areas to be the best that they can be, and that’s how you end up getting a lot of victories, because you have really good players that are committed,” Painter explained.
Miami’s Season Ends on a High Note
Despite the loss, Miami concluded a remarkable season, improving their win total by 19 games from a 7-24 record the previous year. This improvement matched an NCAA record, previously set by Iowa State, which improved by 20 wins after the 2020-21 season. First-year coach Jai Lucas expressed pride in his team’s accomplishments. “It’s hard to acquire here. It’s hard to be a part of March Madness,” Lucas said. “It’s hard to win a game, so I am just appreciative of that.”
Purdue’s next challenge will be a tough matchup against Texas in San Jose. The Boilermakers will appear to continue their impressive tournament run and secure a spot in the Elite Eight. The teams’ first meeting since Purdue eliminated Texas in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament promises to be a compelling contest.
What comes next for Purdue is a focused preparation for a Texas team that will undoubtedly present a different set of challenges. The Boilermakers will need to maintain their offensive efficiency and defensive intensity to advance further in the tournament.
