SAN DIEGO – The future of Kansas men’s basketball remains uncertain as head coach Bill Self said Sunday he has not yet decided whether he will return to lead the Jayhawks for the 2026-27 season. The announcement came after a heartbreaking 67-65 loss to St. John’s in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, a game decided by a buzzer-beating layup.
Self, 63, has built a remarkable legacy during his 23 years at Kansas, securing two national championships (2008, 2022) and establishing the program as a perennial powerhouse. However, recent health concerns have prompted a period of reflection for the Hall of Fame coach. The question of whether he will continue coaching at the highest level is now squarely in focus.
“I’ve gone through some stuff off the court, so I’ll get back and get with family and visit and see what’s going on,” Self stated following the loss. “I love what I do. I necessitate to be able to do it where I’m feeling good and healthy to do it fairly well. I’ll get back home and it will all be discussed.”
The decision, Self clarified, will be based solely on his health, not on the outcome of any single game or season. He has faced several health challenges in recent years, including hospitalizations and procedures to address heart issues. In January, he was briefly hospitalized “out of an abundance of caution” after feeling unwell, and underwent procedures to insert stents into his heart in both 2023 and 2024, according to reports.
A Storied Career at the Crossroads
Bill Self’s impact on Kansas basketball is undeniable. Since taking the helm in 2003, he has amassed an overall record of 855-272, becoming the winningest coach in program history in November 2024, surpassing the legendary Phog Allen. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017, a testament to his sustained success. His coaching record includes 16 Big 12 regular season titles and nine conference tournament championships.
Despite this impressive record, the Jayhawks haven’t reached the Sweet Sixteen since winning the national championship in 2022, falling in the second round three times and the first round once. This recent tournament drought adds another layer of complexity to Self’s decision-making process.
Health Concerns Loom Large
When asked directly about his health on Sunday, Self admitted he wasn’t “completely” healthy, but added, “I’m feeling – I feel as good as I’ve felt in a long time.” He acknowledged a shift in his long-term planning, moving from evaluating his future in five-year increments to a more immediate two-year outlook.
“Every year, I believe… when you get to be doing it as long as I’ve done it, I look at it in five-year increments. Now I’m probably looking at it in more two-year increments, so to speak,” Self explained. “So I attempt to focus on this season and try to get us to a second weekend, which we failed at. So I’ll go back now and break it down and see where that leads.”
The Jayhawks’ season ended in dramatic fashion, with St. John’s securing a 67-65 victory on a last-second layup by Dylan Darling. Kansas had battled back from a 13-point deficit with 7 1/2 minutes remaining, tying the game before the final play. ESPN reported on Self’s post-game comments regarding his future.
Despite the disappointing end to the season, Self remained philosophical. “My career ain’t going to be based on one game,” he said, reiterating his intention to thoroughly evaluate his health situation before making any firm commitments.
What’s Next for Kansas Basketball?
Bill Self’s decision will have a profound impact on the future of Kansas basketball. The program has flourished under his leadership, consistently competing at the highest level and attracting top talent. His ability to develop players – he has coached 43 NBA players, including 12 lottery picks and 18 first-round selections – is a key component of the program’s success.
For now, Self is prioritizing his well-being and taking time to assess his options. The coming weeks will be crucial as he weighs his passion for coaching against the demands of maintaining his health. The Kansas faithful will undoubtedly be watching and waiting for his decision, hoping to see their Hall of Fame coach continue to lead the Jayhawks for years to come.
