a 10x optical zoom (and “periscope” lenses) for 2022?

According to DigiTimes, Apple is working on the use of lenses « periscope »for his next iPhone, around 2022. The latter would benefit from a 10x optical zoom, without affecting the thickness of the phone or the size of the photo module.

Recall that Ming-Chi Kuo was the first to raise this possibility. In its previous July report, the analyst had unveiled certain information on the suppliers of periscope lenses, which should equip certain products of Apple, in particular l’iPhone and the iPad.

It was at the time question that Semco (considered the « best korean lens supplier »), and Sunny Optical (its Chinese counterpart) join the supply chain in the second half of 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Recall that a periscope lens is a set of lenses placed inside the case (with a small mirror at its end) which provides a 10x optical zoom. It can also be combined with a « zoom in sensor » and offer 20x zoom. This technique has already been integrated into some competing smartphones – like the Huawei P40 Pro– and offers a much higher optical zoom in a housing the size of a smartphone. A significant advantage to strengthen the photo performance of theiPhone.

Apple rightly holds a series of patents to this effect, including one from 2016, on the design of a set of lenses and mirrors. The latter would allow him to obtain a optical magnification, like a telephoto lens, by simply moving the lenses a few tenths of a millimeter.
