A cloud of dust caused an endless winter on Earth and the disappearance of the dinosaurs

The consequences of the impact of the asteroid Chicxulub literally changed the face of the world with the absence of light and winter over an extraordinarily long period. This inexorably caused a chain reaction of mass extinctions. Dinosaurs, like many other species, might not withstand the new climatic conditions.

Researcher Özgür Karatekin explains to us that the combination of factors that got the better of the dinosaurs: “After the impact, there were huge fires and tsunamis everywhere. Then, iIt was dark almost everywhere and all the time because of this global cloud. Without the sun’s rays, it was very, very cold. With our simulations and the data collected, we discovered that temperatures had dropped by around twenty degrees from one day to the next, or almost. It was a huge and violent change. The dinosaurs, and more broadly 75% of life on Earth, might not adapt so quickly to this brutal climate change, and for years.

Beyond shedding light on the exact reasons for the disappearance of the dinosaurs, the researchers’ conclusions will provide a better understanding of how our planet reacts and how living species adapt to a radical change in climatic conditions.
