A fire declares itself on a site classified Seveso in the Bouches-du-Rhône and made two light injured

Breaking News: Fire Contained at Seveso-Classified Waste Treatment Site in Rognac

ROGNAC, France – In a dramatic overnight development, a major fire erupted at the SPUR company warehouses in Rognac, Bouches-du-Rhône, a site specializing in the treatment of hazardous waste. The fire was finally contained on Sunday morning, but not before causing injuries to a firefighter and a police officer, according to the prefecture.

Fire Erupts at Hazardous Waste Treatment Site

The blaze, classified as a Seveso site due to its handling of hazardous waste such as paint, solvents, and aerosols, started at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. By 4:30 a.m. Sunday, firefighting efforts had successfully contained the fire, the Bouches-du-Rhône prefecture announced.

Residual Activity and Injuries

Despite the containment, “an active residual home” of the fire remains, prompting 170 firefighters and a dozen gendarmes to stay on the scene. Two members of the intervention force—one firefighter and one gendarme—suffered light injuries and were transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

No Reported Toxicity

The prefecture has assured that no hazardous substances were detected in the atmosphere, and residents of the nearby hamlet of Barjaquets, initially asked to take shelter as a precaution, have been permitted to return home.

Traffic Interruptions and Ongoing Assessment

Traffic on a departmental road and TER services between Miramas and not lancers were interrupted during the emergency. The prefecture continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure no further risks to public safety.

Understanding Seveso Sites

Sites classified as Seveso are subject to strict safety and environmental regulations due to the potential risks posed by the hazardous materials they handle. The classification system originated in response to the catastrophic chemical plant accident in Seveso, Italy, in 1976.

Massive Emergency Response and Determination

The swift and relentless efforts of emergency responders have played a critical role in managing a potentially catastrophic situation. Their ongoing dedication is crucial to ensuring the complete safety and stability of the affected area.
