books by Actress Julianne Moore Removed from Military School Libraries

Actress julianne Moore expressed her “great shock” and “saddened” reaction after learning that her children’s book, “Freckleface Strawberry,” was included in a review of library books at schools serving US military personnel and civilian defence employees. This review, conducted by the Defense Department, aims to ensure alignment with recent executive orders focusing on “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling” and “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism.”

“It is a book I wrote for my children and for other kids to remind them that we all struggle, but are united by our humanity and our community,” Moore stated.

This particular review encompasses all “instructional resources,” and while it’s unclear whether “Freckleface Strawberry” faces removal or further scrutiny, Moore’s sentiment highlights the broader concern surrounding the accessibility of diverse perspectives in education.

Moore, a graduate of the now-closed Frankfurt American high school, a Defense Department-operated institution, added, “I could not be prouder of him and his service to our country. It is indeed galling for me to realize that kids like me, growing up with a parent in the service and attending a [Defense Department] school, will not have access to a book written by someone whose life experience is so similar to their own. And I can’t help but wonder what is so controversial about this picture book that has caused it to be banned by the US government.”

Other books under review include “No Truth Without Ruth” by Kathleen Krull, a biography of Supreme Court Justice ruth bader ginsburg. Removed books have been placed in a “professional collection for evaluation” with access restricted to staff.

Moore expressed her disappointment, stating, “I am truly saddened and never thoght I would see this in a country where freedom of speech and expression is a constitutional right.”

This situation raises important questions about the balance between intellectual freedom and possibly controversial content in educational settings. The implications of restricting access to diverse viewpoints in schools warrant further discussion and careful consideration.

What message do you think this decision sends to children?

Interview: Julianne Moore on the Removal of Her Books from Military School Libraries

Archyde News recently spoke with acclaimed actress and author Julianne Moore about the recent decision by the U.S.Defence Department to review and potentially remove her children’s book, Freckleface Strawberry, from military school libraries. Here’s what she had to say about this developing story.

Julianne, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. Let’s dive right in. You’ve expressed your shock and sadness at the news that your book, Freckleface Strawberry, is under review. Can you tell us more about your initial reaction?

Julianne Moore: “Thank you for having me. Yes, I was truly taken aback when I heard the news. This book is deeply personal for me. It’s a story I wrote to remind children, and myself, that we all have our struggles, but at the end of the day, we’re all united by our shared humanity and community. The idea that it might be removed from libraries, especially those serving military families, is quite disheartening.”

Your book is one of many under review as part of an effort to align instructional resources with recent executive orders. What are your thoughts on this broader initiative?

Julianne moore: “I understand the need to ensure that materials in our schools align with certain guidelines, but I worry that this review process might be going too far. Banning books, or even restricting access to them, goes against the very principles of intellectual freedom and open dialog that our country was founded upon. I believe that diversity of thought and viewpoint is crucial in education, and I’m concerned that this initiative might limit that.”

Another book under review is No Truth Without Ruth, a biography of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Do you see a common thread between these two books, and others on the list?

Julianne Moore: “Yes, I think there is a common thread. These books, like many others on the list, celebrate diversity, equality, and the struggle for justice. They encourage empathy and understanding, which are qualities we should be fostering, not suppressing. I can’t help but wonder what message this sends to children when books like these are removed or restricted.”

You graduated from a Defense Department-operated school yourself. How does this situation impact your perspective on military education?

Julianne Moore: “it’s quite galling, to be honest. Growing up with a parent in the service, I know firsthand the unique challenges and experiences of military children. To think that they might not have access to a book written by someone who understands their world is deeply upsetting. It’s also disconcerting to see the U.S. government effectively banning books in a country that prides itself on freedom of speech and expression.”

Julianne, what woudl you like to say to those who might agree or disagree with this decision, and to the Defense Department as a whole?

Julianne Moore: “I would urge everyone to consider the importance of intellectual freedom and open dialogue, especially in our schools. Let’s not shy away from difficult conversations or diverse perspectives. To the defense Department, I would say: please reconsider this decision. Let’s work together to promote understanding, not censorship, in our military communities.”

Julianne, thank you for your time and for sharing your thoughts with us today.
