A historic “cross-continental” surgical operation.. 8 thousand kilometers separate the doctor and the patient

The surgeon was able to perform the operation from Bordeaux, France, on a 37-year-old man suffering from a kidney tumor in Beijing, China.

With a distance of more than 8,000 kilometers between doctor and patient, Dr. Alberto Breda, head of the Department of Urology, Oncology and Kidney Transplant Surgery at Fundació Puigvert in Barcelona, was able to remove the 3.5 cm tumor.

The operation was performed on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, and is the first of its kind in the world. The patient was able to leave the hospital three days later, reports Actio Bordeaux.

To operate on his patient, who was suffering from a kidney tumor, Dr. Breda used a remote-controlled robot, according to the Independent. The surgeon controlled the robotic arms in the operating room in Beijing, along with a team of supervising doctors.

Despite the thousands of kilometres away, it seemed as if the doctor was there. According to the Spanish website 324.cat, the delay between the commands and the robot’s movements was only 132 milliseconds, a period “imperceptible to the human eye.”

The doctor had already trained in similar conditions on a pig in February 2024, when he took control of the robot in a hospital in Shanghai, from Orlando, Florida, in the United States.

The 9/11 procedure ultimately proved successful. The patient was able to leave the hospital just three days after the operation. This success opens the way for many perspectives, especially regarding the exchange of knowledge between doctors or access to medical skills in some countries, provided that sufficient technology is available to reduce the delay to less than 200 milliseconds.
