He is a child of Chamoson who rose to the highest positions in Swiss diplomacy. The former number 3 of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Valais resident Georges Martin, has decided to put his memories down on paper in a book, “A Life in the Service of My Country”, published in recent days by Slatkine Editions.

Retiring in 2017, the former ambassador was stationed in South Africa, Indonesia, Kenya and Canada for more than four decades. In his memoirs, he looks back on the significant events of his career, such as his meeting with Nelson Mandela at the end of apartheid or the tsunami in Asia in 2004.

“I was very lucky anyway, in the choice of positions,” notes Georges Martin during an interview carried out in his chalet in the heights of Chamoson. He admits to having had the impression, throughout his career, of “jumping from one opportunity to another”, without asking too many questions. “Everywhere I went, extraordinary things happened, positive or negative. From a professional point of view, it was exciting,” he assures.
