Celebrated Irish Author Maeve Kelly Passes Away at 95

Limerick, Ireland – August 2, 2025 – Maeve Kelly, a highly acclaimed Irish author and dedicated advocate for women’s rights, has died peacefully at Riverdale Nursing Home in Blackwater, Ardnacrusha, at the age of 95. Her passing marks a notable loss for the Irish and international literary communities.

Born on July 2nd, 1930, in Clonevin, pass Road, redgate, limerick, Kelly leaves behind a legacy of impactful writing and tireless activism. She was deeply devoted to her family, and is survived by her son, Joe, his partner Alison, and her brother, Brian Kelly. She is also remembered fondly by her grandchildren, George, Oliver, and Sophie, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Kelly’s contribution to Irish literature is considerable, with her works exploring themes of identity, societal change, and the female experience.Beyond her literary achievements, she was a founding member and director of Adapt House Women’s refuge Limerick, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to the rights and well-being of women. Her involvement with Adapt House underscored her belief in providing safe havens and support systems for those in need.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gerard, her beloved daughter, Oonagh, and siblings Pam, Sheila, and Seamus.

A Requiem Mass will be held at St Joseph’s church, O’Connell Avenue, on Thursday, August 7th, at 11:30 am.Following the Mass, burial will take place at Kilmurry Cemetery, Castletroy.The Requiem Mass will be live-streamed and can be viewed here.Donations in Lieu of Flowers:
