A surreal painting by the painter Yves tanguy, valued at more than 280,0000 euros, which a businessman forgot at a Düsseldorf airport, has been recovered in a recycling bin nearby, the police announced today.
The businessman, whose identity has not been disclosed, accidentally left the French painter’s work (40 by 60 centimeters) at a check-in counter while boarding a flight from Düsseldorf to Tel Aviv November 27. When he landed in Israel he contacted the Düsseldorf police, but the painting, which was wrapped in a cardboard package, had disappeared. Authorities were unable to locate him, according to police spokesman Andre Hartwig.
The businessman’s nephew traveled to the airport in the German city from neighboring Belgium and spoke directly with the police. An inspector was able to trace the work to the paper recycling bin used by the airport cleaning company. «It is definitely one of our happiest stories of the year. It was real detective work, ”Hartwig said.
