Sergei Furgal was elected governor of the Khabarovsk Territory in 2018. In July 2020, he was detained on charges of organizing two contract killings and one assassination attempt. Later, Furgal was transferred to Moscow, which provoked thousands of protests in the Far East. On February 2, 2023, the jury found the former governor guilty, and on February 10, the court sentenced Furgal to 22 years in a strict regime colony.
