Addressing the Alarming Rise of Suicide: Mental Health Awareness in Singapore

The Samaritans of Singapore documented that 476 suicides were recorded in 2022 in the city, an increase of 26% compared to last year, with a noticeable increase among young people and the elderly, according to Bloomberg News.

She added that suicide was the leading cause of death among people between the ages of 10 and 29 in the country for the fourth year in a row, who make up regarding 39% of the total age group.

The high mortality highlights the importance of mental health and awareness issues. The World Health Organization has set a target to reduce the global suicide rate by a third by 2030.

Psychiatrist and mental health consultant Jared Ng told the media that “the unprecedented increase in the number of suicides indicates the presence of a hidden psychological problem hanging over Singapore society, especially among young people and the elderly.”

An estimated 703,000 people died by suicide in 2019, making it one of the leading causes of death worldwide, according to the WHO report.
