Addressing the Crisis of Displaced Syrians in Lebanon: Insights from Representative Ihab Matar

2024-04-16 08:50:34

Representative Ihab Matar pointed out that “with every incident, the file of displaced Syrians is opened, and we witness a “hope” and suggestions of “something is going up and something is going down.” Some of them exploit the issue for political ends, others for personal goals or to evade responsibility, and the most dangerous are those who rush to discourse. Sectarian and racist, while the truth is that we have been hearing regarding these “mawawil” for years, and we have not seen any indication of regulating the situation of the displaced on Lebanese territory.”

He stressed in a statement that “they always forget the question: Does the Syrian regime want its people to return or not?”, noting that “it is clear that it does not want them to return, and all official and unofficial Lebanese attempts have not yielded results.” He stressed, “In the face of this ongoing crisis, the Lebanese interior is at least capable of organizing those on its territory, in preparation for the appropriate moment for their safe and sound return.”

Matar reminded that “not all Syrians in Lebanon are displaced, as everyone who enters Syria or leaves through its legal crossings is not displaced,” stressing that it is “one of many crises that are suffocating Lebanon, and the beginning will only be by restoring the country’s path by electing a president of the republic and forming a government.” So, let every Lebanese know that he hears nothing but illusions from the political forces, may God protect Lebanon.”
