As people increasingly turn to AI-powered chatbots for quick answers and information, a growing body of research suggests these interactions aren’t neutral. A new study from Yale University reveals that even seemingly objective responses from chatbots can subtly influence users’ social and political opinions, raising concerns about the potential for algorithmic bias to shape public perception. “We show that querying an AI chatbot to obtain historical facts can influence people’s opinions even when the information provided is accurate and nobody has prompted the tool to try to persuade you of anything,” explains Daniel Karell, an assistant professor of sociology at Yale University and the study’s senior author. “The effects are modest but could compound if somebody frequently engages with chatbots for factual information.” The study involved 1,912 participants who were presented with summaries of two 20th-century historical events – the Seattle General Strike of 1919 and the Third World Liberation Front student protests of 1968 – generated either by OpenAI’s GPT-4o or from Wikipedia entries.
Researchers found that, compared to the more transparently edited Wikipedia entries, both the default AI summaries and those deliberately framed with a liberal perspective led participants to express more liberal opinions about the events. Conversely, summaries with a conservative slant prompted more conservative viewpoints. The study suggests that the default summaries exhibited a subtle “liberal” bias, demonstrating the persuasive effect of these latent biases within LLMs. However, Karell notes that these shifts were relatively modest, moving opinions from a moderate to a somewhat liberal stance.
Political Ideology and AI Influence
To further investigate this phenomenon, researchers likewise examined whether pre-existing political beliefs influenced the degree to which AI summaries swayed opinions. They found that liberal framing consistently led to more liberal opinions across all ideological groups. However, the conservative framing only significantly impacted the opinions of participants who already identified as politically conservative. This suggests that conservative framing in AI-generated content is more likely a result of deliberate prompting, while liberal framing may stem from a combination of both latent biases and prompting.
“We show that using chatbots to learn about history has unanticipated and anticipated influences on people’s opinions,” Karell stated. He emphasized the opacity of AI chatbot development, contrasting it with the transparency of Wikipedia’s editing process. “Our work suggests that the companies developing these models have the ability to shape people’s opinions, which is an unsettling thought.”
