Nearly half – 45% – of responses generated by leading AI chatbots contain significant inaccuracies when summarizing current events. This isn’t a fringe issue; it’s a systemic problem with potentially devastating consequences for informed public discourse and, ultimately, democracy itself. A new study by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the BBC lays bare the extent of the problem, revealing that even the most sophisticated AI models are routinely distorting the news, and raising urgent questions about our reliance on these tools as information sources.

The Scale of the Problem: Beyond ‘Hallucinations’

The EBU-BBC research, spanning 18 countries and 14 languages, didn’t rely on anecdotal evidence. Professional journalists rigorously evaluated thousands of responses from ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Perplexity, assessing accuracy, sourcing, and the crucial distinction between fact and opinion. The results were alarming. While 20% of responses contained “major accuracy issues” – including outright fabrication (often called ‘hallucinations’) and outdated information – a full 45% had at least one significant issue. Google’s Gemini performed the worst, with 76% of its responses flagged for significant problems, particularly concerning source attribution.

This isn’t simply about occasional errors. It’s about a fundamental flaw in how these models process and present information. They are designed to generate plausible-sounding text, not necessarily truthful text. And as more people turn to AI for news – 7% globally, rising to 15% among those under 25, according to the Reuters Institute’s Digital News Report – the risk of widespread misinformation grows exponentially.

Why We’re Particularly Vulnerable Now

The timing couldn’t be worse. Generative AI is rapidly becoming a primary gateway to information, challenging the dominance of traditional search engines. People are increasingly relying on AI-powered summaries instead of actively seeking out multiple sources and critically evaluating information. Worryingly, a Pew Research Center poll found that three-quarters of US adults never get their news from AI chatbots, but even those who do often fail to verify the information provided by clicking on source links – a critical step in discerning fact from fiction.

This lack of verification, coupled with the inherent unreliability of AI-generated content, creates a perfect storm for manipulation and the erosion of trust. As EBU Media Director Jean Philip De Tender warns, “When people don’t know what to trust, they end up trusting nothing at all, and that can deter democratic participation.”

The Rise of AI-Generated Video: A New Level of Deception

The problem extends beyond text. The emergence of AI video generation tools like OpenAI’s Sora is adding another layer of complexity – and danger. Sora, downloaded a million times in its first five days, can create incredibly realistic videos, even depicting events that never happened or resurrecting deceased individuals. While Sora includes a watermark, users are already finding ways to remove it, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish between real and fabricated footage.

Video has historically been considered powerful evidence, but AI is rapidly dismantling that assumption. This is particularly concerning given the existing challenges of misinformation and the balkanization of the information ecosystem fueled by social media algorithms designed for engagement, not accuracy. Generative AI isn’t creating a new problem; it’s dramatically accelerating an existing one.

The Historical Context: From Subscriptions to Summaries

Historically, staying informed required effort and investment – subscribing to newspapers, dedicating time to reading and analysis. The AI-driven news model bypasses both of these hurdles, offering instant, free summaries. But as the EBU-BBC research demonstrates, this convenience comes at a steep price: a significant increase in the risk of encountering inaccurate and misleading information.

Looking Ahead: What Can Be Done?

The situation demands a multi-faceted response. Simply hoping AI developers will “fix” the problem isn’t enough. Here are some crucial steps:

  • Enhanced Media Literacy: We need to equip individuals with the critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate information from all sources, including AI. This includes understanding how AI models work, recognizing potential biases, and verifying information through multiple sources.
  • Transparency and Accountability: AI developers must be more transparent about the limitations of their models and take greater responsibility for the accuracy of the information they generate. Clear labeling of AI-generated content is essential.
  • Source Verification Tools: Development of tools that automatically verify the sources cited by AI chatbots and flag potential inaccuracies.
  • Support for Quality Journalism: Investing in and supporting independent, fact-based journalism is more critical than ever. Human journalists remain the best defense against misinformation.

The future of news isn’t about eliminating AI; it’s about integrating it responsibly. We need to harness the power of AI to enhance journalism, not replace it.
