AIDS: The world’s first woman believed to have been cured of HIV

A female patient in the United States is believed to be the third person in the world and the first woman to recover from HIV/AIDS.

The middle-aged woman was being treated for leukemia when she received a stem cell transplant from a person with natural resistance to the virus that causes AIDS. She has now been virus-free for 14 months. But experts say the transplant method used, which includes blood from the umbilical cord, may not be suitable for most people with HIV.
