AJ Styles Reveals Dream Opponents He Never Faced in Wrestling

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

AJ Styles, a mainstay in professional wrestling for over two decades, recently reflected on his illustrious career and pinpointed a couple of opponents he wished he’d had the chance to face. Speaking on the Talk’n Shop Podcast, the WWE veteran discussed missed opportunities and the talent he deeply respects within the industry.

Styles’ comments highlighted the dynamic nature of professional wrestling, where dream matchups don’t always materialize due to timing, promotions, or other factors. His reflections offer a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes considerations that shape the landscape of the sport and the rivalries fans hope to see.

One name that consistently came up in Styles’ discussion was Penta El Zero Miedo, currently wrestling with WWE. “Penta’s up there,” Styles stated, explaining his admiration for the luchador’s skill and charisma. “Yeah, just because I never had the opportunity to do it, you understand, and he’s such a great guy. He’s so good. I would love to been able to do that.” Styles’ respect for Penta underscores the high regard he holds for performers who bring both athleticism and personality to the ring.

Beyond current stars, Styles also expressed regret over never sharing the ring with Rey Mysterio. “Rey’s definitely another one I wish I would have been able to get in the ring with. Like, those guys are freaking, they’re so freaking good.” This sentiment speaks to the generational respect within wrestling, where established stars acknowledge the influence and talent of those who paved the way.

However, Styles’ conversation wasn’t solely focused on past what-ifs. He also emphasized the importance of mentorship and open communication within the wrestling community. He stressed the value of experienced performers guiding younger talent, encouraging them to ask questions and learn the nuances of the craft.

“So it there’s not any wrong questions. It doesn’t matter how new you are to this entertainment business. Just ask the question, dude,” Styles advised. He explained that even seasoned professionals sometimes lose sight of the fan perspective, making the input of newer performers valuable. “Because sometimes I don’t think like a fan, and at that point in their career, they still are. We all are.”

Styles illustrated this point with a recent experience attending an independent wrestling show with his son. He recounted a situation where he understood the mechanics of a move, while his son was completely unfamiliar with it. “I took my son to an indie match to just watch… And a move was being done and I knew what was going on… But he had no idea because they hadn’t done it before. He hadn’t seen it before.” This experience reminded Styles of the importance of catering to new fans and ensuring that even complex maneuvers are presented in a way that is understandable and engaging.

He further explained the need to build up moves and storylines, ensuring that fans understand the context before a dramatic moment occurs. “We forget about like a simple up and over. It’s because before that, he threw us in the corner and freaking tore our guts out by putting a shoulder in it. So the next time it happens if the up and over happens and he takes the buckle, and then we can get on it.”

AJ Styles’ reflections offer a compelling look at the career of a wrestling icon, his respect for his peers, and his commitment to the future of the sport. His willingness to discuss missed opportunities and the importance of mentorship provides valuable insight for both fans and aspiring wrestlers.

As Styles continues his career, the wrestling world will undoubtedly be watching to see what new challenges he embraces and what legacy he continues to build. His continued presence in WWE ensures that fans will have plenty more opportunities to witness his exceptional talent and experience.
