The 2021 French champions, Lille, announced on Wednesday the appointment of former Roma coach Paulo Fonseca as its new coach for two seasons.

He will succeed the 49-year-old Jocelyn Gurvinek, who was sacked following a season in charge of the French team.

“It’s a very proud moment for me and a great honor to be Lille’s coach,” said Fonseca.

“I am happy to embark on this adventure and excited to work with the coaching staff and players. I am very motivated and determined to achieve the goals set and take the club to the highest levels.”

Fonseca is waiting for the task of bringing Lille back into the competition for European positions, at least following it finished last season in tenth place, just one year following winning the local league title.

Fonseca had previously supervised the training of Porto and Braga, Portugal, before moving to Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk and then to Rome between 2019 and 2021.
