Al-Marsad newspaper: Researcher Hammoud Al-Sahoud narrated the love story of “Urwa bin Hazam” and his cousin, “Afra,” and what happened to him following he returned from traveling and learned of her marriage to Amir.
He said during an interview with the “Al-Liwan” program, “Urwa bin Hizam was the first to die because of love,” noting that he grew up as an orphan in his uncle’s house, and since his childhood he loved his cousin, “Afra,” and when she grew up, she was one of the most beautiful women.
He continued: “Urwa asked his aunt to tell his uncle that he wanted to marry Afra, and his uncle Afra told Urwa to go and earn a living because her mother wanted a dowry of 100 camels.”
He added: “Urwa went to Yemen to work with one of his cousins, and his cousin promised him something good and got 100 camels, but it was a long time and a lot of travel, and he decided to return.”
Marrying a prince
He continued: “On the other side, in the Bani Adra tribe, one of the princes asked to marry Afra and her father refused at first. His wife urged him and said, ‘A prince has come to you, and we don’t know regarding him, whether he is alive or dead, or if he got the 100 camels or not,’ so he agreed to the marriage.” His daughter was from the prince, and the marriage took place and she went with her husband.
He pointed out that Afra’s father asked to build a grave, and when Urwa returned, his uncle told him that Afra fell ill and died, and Urwa lay down on the grave crying, then the girls of the neighborhood came to him and told him that she had gotten married, and Urwa followed his cousin and met her, took her veil and left, and when she asked him to… Where, he said, to despair or death.
The death of Orwa and Afra
He added, Orwa’s condition worsened, and his friends took him to fortune tellers and doctors until he died, and Afra also followed him.
