Indonesian female tennis player Aldila Sutjiadi and her Chinese partner, Xu Yifan, advanced to the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Ningbo Open tournament without competing.
The women’s doubles pair automatically advanced after their opponents, Anna Danilina from Kazakhstan and Irina Khromacheva from Russia, withdrew because Danilina had a fever.
With no alternative players, Aldila and Xu immediately qualified for the next round.
In the quarter-finals, Aldila/Xu will face a tough challenge when they face host players Zhang Shuai/Yang Zhaoxuan.
Zhang is Xu’s former partner, adding to the tension of the upcoming match.
“We are very ready for the next match and hope to give our best. I am happy to be able to fight with Xu, and of course we will focus on facing Zhang/Yang in the quarter-finals,” said Aldila in a written statement, Wednesday (16/10).
Previously, when asked about preparations for the Ningbo Open, Aldila said there was no difficulty in adjusting his game with Xu. Because they are both doubles specialist tennis players.
“Adapting to partners is quite easy because we are doubles players and already know each other’s weaknesses and strengths, so we just have to adjust our game strategy,” said Aldila.
Aldila arrived in Ningbo after appearing at the WTA 1000 Wuhan tournament, where she partnered Canadian Leylah Fernandez.
In this tournament Aldila and Leylah faced tough opponents, Olympic champions and Grand Slam champions.
It was Aldila/Ley who performed solidly and advanced to the semifinals. However, their steps stopped after fighting hard against the United States pair Asia Muhammad/Jessica Pegula.
