Alert about “abusive” use of medicines and vitamins in Venezuela

He warned that “consumption of more than 4 grams of acetaminophen daily can cause sudden liver failure and people take it like candy.”

The endocrine doctor and internist María Gabriela Guercio warned that currently “there is a use and abuse of drugs and vitamins” in Venezuela.

He reiterated that a patient “should not consume anything that is not indicated by a specialist or by a doctor because the consequences can be highly variable.”

He exemplified that people frequently ingest diclofenac or ibuprofen “and these drugs cause hypertensive crises or lead patients to kidney failure that causes tubulointerstitial nephritis disease and that can lead the patient to dialysis.”

He further warned that “consumption of more than 4 grams of acetaminophen daily can cause sudden liver failure and people take it like candy.”

The expert emphasized the assistance of medical personnel to ingest or use any type of medication when the symptoms persist for more than a day, even if it is simple headaches.
