Alexander Isak Injury Update: Return Timeline & VM Playoff Status

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Liverpool forward Alexander Isak faces a race against time to be fit for Sweden’s vital World Cup playoff matches later this month. The 24-year-vintage, who suffered a fractured fibula in December, is currently undergoing rehabilitation, with his return to action tentatively scheduled for late March or early April, according to Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

The timing presents a significant challenge for Sweden, who will face Ukraine in a playoff semi-final on March 26th. A potential final against either Poland or Albania awaits on March 31st. Isak’s availability for these crucial matches remains highly uncertain, casting a shadow over Sweden’s hopes of qualifying for the tournament.

Slot provided an update during a press conference, stating that Isak will rejoin the group for training “somewhere around the international break, depending on if he has any setbacks.” Yet, he cautioned that a return to training does not guarantee immediate match fitness. “That doesn’t mean he’s ready to start playing directly,” Slot added, as reported by Expressen.

Isak sustained the injury during Liverpool’s match against Tottenham in December after a challenge from Micky Van de Ven. He subsequently underwent a successful operation, but the recovery process has been carefully managed. Prior to the injury, Isak had scored three goals in 16 appearances for Liverpool since his transfer from Newcastle.

Initial Optimism, Then Setback

Initial reports in late December offered a glimmer of hope for Isak’s participation in the playoffs. Fotbollskanalen reported that Liverpool believed Isak could be back in contention as early as March, citing information from The Athletic. This timeline raised the possibility of him featuring in the crucial matches against Ukraine and potentially Poland or Albania.

However, the latest updates suggest a more cautious approach. While a return to team training is anticipated around the international break, his match readiness remains a question mark. Sweden’s national team manager, Graham Potter, acknowledged the severity of Isak’s injury, alongside that of Dejan Kulusevski, stating they are “two big injuries” and that a return to fitness by March would be “tough,” according to Aftonbladet.

Potter Remains Hopeful, But Realistic

Potter emphasized that both Isak and Kulusevski are working diligently on their rehabilitation. “They are optimistic and they are working very, very hard in their clubs to be able to play with us in March,” he said. Despite this, he tempered expectations, acknowledging the challenges of recovering from significant injuries in time for the playoff matches. He added that while there is “a chance,” the injuries are substantial.

The situation leaves Potter with a difficult selection dilemma as he prepares for the playoff matches. The absence of a key player like Isak would undoubtedly impact Sweden’s attacking options. The Swedish national team will be hoping for a positive update on Isak’s condition in the coming weeks.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot as well expressed a desire to see Isak reach his full potential. “Unfortunately for him and for us, we haven’t seen the best Alex,” Slot stated. “We will see that next season.”

As Isak continues his recovery, all eyes will be on his progress. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether he can overcome the injury and play a part in Sweden’s quest to qualify for the World Cup. The next confirmed checkpoint will be his return to group training, where his condition will be closely monitored by both Liverpool and the Swedish national team.
