Algeria’s “champion” team bid farewell to the African Championship

The holder of the African Nations Championship bid farewell to the tournament following losing to Ivory Coast, and Equatorial Guinea qualified for the second round.

Algeria, the defending champion, was expelled from the African Nations Championship, following losing today, Thursday, to Ivory Coast, in the third and final round of the group stage.

The Ivory Coast team ended the first half with two goals without a response, as it advanced through Franck Kissier in the 22nd minute, and consolidated its lead with the goal of Ibrahim Sangari (39 d).

In the second half, Ivory Coast scored the third goal through Nicolas Pepe (54th minute).

The Algerian team tried to return in the match, but Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty kick, following which Algeria’s only goal came through Sofiane Ben Debka (73rd).

The Sahel team topped Group E with 7 points, to qualify for the round of 16, where it will face Egypt, while Algeria ranked last (one point).

In a second match, within the same group competition, Equatorial Guinea defeated Sierra Leone, with a goal scored by Pablo Gannet (38th).

Guinea qualified in second place (6 points), with leaders Ivory Coast, and Sierra Leone ranked third with one point.
