On June 8, the Cuba Karate Team left for a base of understanding to be held from the 12th to the 20th of this month on Guatemalan soil, in the cities of Escuintla and Mazatenango.
Under the direction of coach Eliecer Llamos, a total of nine athletes set out for the event, with a stopover in Panama, five of them male and four female, to fundamentally prepare for the Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023.
The critical situation in sports in Cuba includes martial arts, even where going out to events outside the island depend on the help of the International Federation.
Such is the case that to attend this tournament, the Executive Committee of the Olympic Committee of the Central American country allocated a sum of 11186.12 of American dollars, equivalent to 86,458.38 Q (Guatemalan quetzal) so that the Cuban team could cover airfare, food, hydration and travel insurance.
To the surprise of few and in addition to the mass exodus that does not exclude athletes, sources confirmed the leaks of four of the karate fighters, which represents almost half a team.
Young Cienfuegos Darío Diaz and Yaidel Hernández, Sunilda Ventosa from Havana and Gerardo Almenares from Santiago decided to leave the group before the event ended.
