A new study is raising serious concerns about the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the treatment of breast cancer. Researchers found that women who chose alternative therapies over conventional medical care faced a significantly higher risk of mortality. The findings underscore the importance of evidence-based treatment approaches and highlight the potential dangers of relying on unproven remedies.
The research, analyzing data from over two million women diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States between 2011 and 2021, revealed a stark disparity in survival rates. While the vast majority – 97.6% – of women opted for traditional treatment, a modest percentage explored alternative options. Those who exclusively used CAM experienced substantially lower survival rates compared to those who adhered to conventional medical protocols, even when CAM was used in conjunction with traditional treatments. This reinforces the critical role of established medical interventions in combating breast cancer.
Increased Mortality Risk with Alternative Therapies
The study, conducted by researchers at Yale University, demonstrated that patients who forwent traditional treatments in favor of complementary and alternative medicine had a greater risk of dying within a five-year span. According to Daniel Boffa, a professor of thoracic surgery and cancer specialist at Yale School of Medicine, “The breast cancer patients who chose to forgo traditional treatments in favor of CAM appeared to have lower survival rates.” This finding aligns with previous research, including a 2018 study that showed cancer patients exclusively using alternative medicine similarly had a greater mortality rate than those undergoing mainstream cancer treatments.
It’s important to note that the term “alternative medicine” encompasses a wide range of practices. While some, like meditation, may offer supportive benefits, others carry significant risks. The improper use of therapies like chelation therapy, for example, can have potentially fatal side effects. Even delaying or avoiding conventional care in favor of ineffective alternative remedies can prove dangerous, allowing the cancer to progress unchecked.
Progress in Breast Cancer Treatment and Ongoing Challenges
Despite these concerns, overall progress in breast cancer treatment has been substantial. According to Yale School of Medicine, approximately nine in ten women with breast cancer survive for at least five years after diagnosis. However, breast cancer remains a formidable opponent, particularly when it has already metastasized. For the 6% of women diagnosed with distant metastasis, the five-year survival rate drops to just 32% [1]. This statistic highlights the demand for continued research and improved treatment options for advanced stages of the disease.
Research into metastatic breast cancer has shown incremental improvements over time. A study examining patients treated at Yale–New Haven Hospital found that the median survival for those with metastatic breast cancer increased from 21 months in 1920 to 41 months in the decade from 1970 to 1980 [2]. While progress has slowed in recent years, the ongoing pursuit of more effective therapies remains a priority.
Disparities in Breast Cancer Outcomes
Addressing disparities in breast cancer outcomes is also crucial. For example, breast cancer mortality is approximately 40% greater in Black women compared to non-Hispanic white women [5]. Understanding and mitigating these disparities requires targeted research and culturally sensitive healthcare interventions.
The current study reinforces the importance of informed decision-making and open communication between patients and their healthcare providers. While complementary therapies may play a role in supportive care, they should not be used as a substitute for evidence-based medical treatment. The data clearly demonstrates that relying solely on alternative medicine can have devastating consequences for women battling breast cancer.
Looking ahead, continued research is essential to improve breast cancer treatment and address existing disparities. Further investigation into the effectiveness of various therapies, as well as a deeper understanding of the factors contributing to unequal outcomes, will be critical in the ongoing fight against this disease.
